I own a 1994 sift anniversary fitted with a carver cascade 2 gas/electric water heater. At the end of last season it developed a leak on under the unit which we managed to fix - it has corroded and we bench welded it. Unfortunatley we have the same problem and have decided to replace the unit. I have seen that you can purchase a brand new Henry heater and was wondering if this unit would fit exactly into position of my old heater. In addition, how much different wiring etc would need to be run. Is this a big job, needing a specialist? Would people recommend buying an original second hand one and taking a chance. Fed up as was really excited about the beginning of the season and van once again out of action - nice and clean though!

The Henry is a direct replacement for the Carver with the only real difference being you need a new Henry wall switch and control cable (which should be included in the package).
Buying a second hand Carver is an option, but you do not know how long it will last or what damage it already has.
Fitting should be done by a LPG qualified engineer as pressure testing will have to be done on completion

There is a third option, you could send it to me for overhaul, I would not for as Damian says recommend taking a chance buying secondhand, or the other option.
Not happy you have tried welding your tank as this must damage the special internal protective coating and not the way I do it, however I have a few repairable tanks in stock.
More to the point my method of repair is 100% successful and although I cannot guarantee a fresh hole appearing in the distant future, as far as the repair itself, better than new and near if not impossible to leak again?!

The gas has been tapped off, can the Henry run on electric only? Or will we have to have the gas run back to the unit. Many thanks for your advise.
Do people specialise in LPG fitting of units like this for caravans or is it just finding a registered gas plumber?
My husband seems to think that there are 3 wires on the Carver and only 2 on the Henry is this an issue or does it just bypass the other system.

My Dad did the fix. I think that he used araldite and welded a piece of aluminium on the bottom of the unit. As you say this is not ideal at all which is why I am considering a new unit. Unfortunately this is going to cost a lot of money balanced against the value of the van. Would you be able to takle a repair? I have just found out that it was not welded on it was just araldited over the hole. When cleaned up the hole was about 3-4mm across. What kind of money are we talking and what time frame would you be able to do it in if we wanted to go ahead.

I have a Henry as a direct replacement for the Carver Cascade in my Bailey Pageant Moselle and it fitted directly. The original cascade switches were also used by the dealer who did the work, so you wouldn't know the difference.
