This morning i drove from my village to Kelso ( 7 miles ) to go to Lidls. As it was foggy i put my head lights and front and rear fog lights on. The amount of cars that i saw had no lights on, only the DRL,s . I noticed one who had actually managed to turn on there sidelights. And to cap it all some idiot started to tailgate me. How did these candidates for Darwins award actually pass a test?

It's no consolation but the idiots aren't confined to the Scottish Borders - they were all over the Midlands and East Anglia today as well.

The ijiot civil servant who specified DRLs on the front only needs shooting, figuratively not literally!

There is no such thing as common sense!

The other issues is that many cars have Auto Lights... i.e. some not so smart system determines when to automatically turn the lights on or off.

Mine has this but it only works when it gets dark.... not in rain or fog. At least I'm aware of the limitations and go to manual.

Our Kia and VW are the same . You MUST go to manual for lights in fog or rain. Overcast they work . I wonder why the rear lights don’t come on with the DLRs?

There's bound to be an option in one of your menus - 'do you want rear tail lights on or off with DRLs?'

Generally though, with modern cars and auto headlights, it can be less than obvious how to turn them on manually, especially when you're fumbling around whilst trying to watch where you're driving in the mist...

Our Kia has limited menus and for sure the option of DRL plus rear lights doesn’t feature. But it’s not difficult as the rotary light stalk is position 1 lights off except DRL. Position 2 auto lights with DRL on. Position 3 sidelights including rear lights. Position 4 full head and rear lights. If fog and rear high intensity are required there is a supplementary switch on the lighting stalk. There’s no more fumbling around than using indicators, wipers or screen wash. The RAV4 is similar except position 1 is auto lights etc.

I'm surprised at your Touareg needing anything other than auto - mine doesn't as switching rear fog light on automatically selects full lighting - it is possible the change the coding on the Touareg to have rear lights with DRLs.
