Cavalaire Sur Mer

We have decided to have a change of scenery this year in France and rather than going down the west coast, trying the eastern route and finishing up on the Cote D'Azur. There seem to be a couple of attractive sites in the ACSI book in a place called Cavalaire sur Mer but as usual with ACSI you only get a brief description. Has anyone any experience of either "de la Baie" or "Bonporteau" sites, or of Cavalaire as a destination.

Many Thanks, John

My friends live in La Croix Valmer which is adjoining Cavalaire so I've been there loads of times. We stayed at Camping de la Baie some years ago - it's very handy for town, pitches were slightly on the small side, and some with quite difficult access due to bad terracing! Sanitary facilities were fine, and the pool area OK. There was a small bar on site at that time, but plenty of other bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Friends used to like Bonporteau which has access to a lovely beach - but I've no experience of the site itself.

Cavalaire is a typical French seaside town - heaving in high season, much quieter in June or September. It has all the usual touristy things - plenty of restaurants, including all the usual chain ones, wind-surfing and other water sports, a glass-bottomed boat trip, amusement parc for children, it's 'flat' for the most part you could cycle right along the coast from Cavalaire centre to the La Croix Valmer end of the beach (though Bonporteau is on the hill at the Cavalaire end - and there are steep hills inland behind the town). Beyond La Croix Valmer there's a super route around all the headlands out towards Cap Camarat, to some more secluded beaches and around into St Tropez. In Cavalaire itself there are lots of different beaches - some with quite steep charges for using the facilities, but other public beaches. There are lots of beach restaurants - some quite pricey. We like the beaches at the Gigaro end which is almost La Croix Valmer - but the beach is quite narrow, and parking has become difficult in recent years at that end.

Thanks Val. I should have made it clear that we will only be there May and June. We are always surprised that seaside towns in the far south-west or vendee are practically deserted on weekdays in June, no matter what the weather. I'm assuming this area might be a little busier but not heaving hopefully.
