A wrong has been put right...............

Just to highlight that Alistair Darling has done some of us caravaners a favour.

Now if your towcar was first registered between March 1st 2001 and March 23rd 2006, and has an engine CO2 rating of over 225g/km, your tax band is now K instead of L or M.

Many 4x4 and larger engined cars will now have a cheaper annual vehicle excise duty (car tax), than was the original proposal.

For example :-

Nissan Terrano 2.7 Diesel with 262g/km emissions first registered May 1st 2002.

Before reform would have cost £435 / year from April 2010

Because of reform will now cost £245 / year from April 2010

A considerable saving!!!!

Being as the government has shown its hand, i'd be very careful.

Their latest action in not putting its proposed tax hike into motion is based solely on the currant climate.

So If things improved significantly by the end of 2010, one could assume quite sensibly that this huge tax rises would still take place, be it the labour government or a new Tory one . so I would tread carefully, if the idea of having to pay

The original announcement that 4x4's and larger engined cars were to be subject to a more than doubling of VED rates, was deemed unfair to a specific and fixed number of vehicles, that had already been purchased.

This announcement was first made on March 23 2006, and was to apply to such cars first registered after March 1 2001.

The new reform is specifically for such cars purchase after March 1 2001 and before March 23 2006.

This group has permanently been placed in band K and will be subject to any future rises for that band.

The original ruling was not applied to such vehicles registered before March 1 2001, they were placed into the above 1549cc band.

This groups VED rate will be

Gafferbill. you are assuming that band K, the 201 to 225 co2 grouping, will stay quite closely linked to the lower groups in price.

the 201-225 group K, already has what the government considers unacceptable high co2 ratings. If you have a copy of the original proposal, band K was indeed the

Hi Gafferbill,

I was quite relieved at Darling's U-turn on excise duty - but was mindful that the reprieve would only be temporary.

However, it's worth remembering that the Government got an awful press on the issue of the 2001-2006 car anomolies and were desperate for a way out.

Having conveniently pushed it aside, I doubt whether the wriggling reprobates will want to resurrect it again - they'll probably try something different, just as bad.

But it's also worth considering that one way or another Brown and Darling will almost certainly be out of it by 2010 - leaving other hapless politicians to deal with the consequences of their economic legacy.

The only certainty, of course, is that tax in general and excise duty in particular will only head in one direction - up. None of us can be sure by how much, but it seems a safe bet that those with lower car emissions will fare better, and guzzlers will pay a high price...
