I saw the first few minutes last night of the Christmas Catherine Tate show - I was absolutely disgusted with what I saw and turned it off half way through the first sketch. The use of such vulgar language on a so called TV Christmas comedy show beggars belief. If that is what present day comedy and Christmas TV is all about - thank goodness I saw very lettle TV yesterday. It is about time the powers that be did something to clean up the programmes. Apparantly Eastenders came out as the most watched programme on TV yesterday - another programme which in my opinion should be consigned to the dust bin.

Cant stand Cat Tate, load of tat.

Most of TV now days has gone down the pan.

I think its the master plan to dum our brains.

Totally agree Colin. It is beyond belief how people like C.Tate end up with their own TV programme. I only saw the end of Eastenders whilst waiting for something else and how depressing was that for Christmas TV and a supposedly family day.

Yes, it was rubbish (t`other `alf watching soaps), sky+`d Doctor Who which I think is very inventive and great entertainment, but what a disappointment! Just hope it doesn`t go totally down the pan when that talentless trollope Tate becomes a regular feature.

you know chaps you really should get out more or exersize the right thumb more often to change the station if you dont like whats on just like I do when a soap comes on there is a least 100 more channels to watch.

I find catherine tate very funny and witty. but then I like the humorous fast moving scetch shows a vast improvment on the 20year old two ronnies we usually get on at christmas.

or do you like your humour from some fat bloke on stage taking the p**s out of somebody else I wonder???

I've never watched a Catherine Tate programme. I've seen many trailers advertising her show though and have come to the conclusion that to draw peoples attention to the show they must show some good bits. From that I deduce the show must be crap because I haven't seen a trailer that comes anywhere near funny.

No, I think I will stick with the Two Ronnies :O)

At least they had talent, wrote their own scripts and had timing that no comedian could beat.

Colin, could you inform the five who have posted who think she is a load of ****** what we are missing :O)

Lord B. although I worked in construction all my life and am used to foul language from site workers there is a time and place for that type of behaviour. I have never used any where as vulgar as that in front of my wife and family and for the respectable members of this forum I will not quote the foul mouthed language as I heard on that show last night.

As for having the button to turn off/over to another channel that is exactly what I did - I turned the rubbish off. I also get out and about and also have a life so I am familiar with the world outside my front door. As for the Two Ronnies/Morcambe and Wise they provided good clean family entertainment and a lot of their programmes were not only funny but clever. Therefore in conclusion I do not like paying for a TV licence to have that type of language brought into my house for family entertainment. I strongly object especially when both my wife and daughter are there to hear it as well. Respect for the human being has long gone down the drain and the way the BBC are performing they are making sure it stays there.

I could sit and listen to ballet music and enjoy it - fair enough I could not sit and watch ballet for very long as I do not understand the performance of the dancers and what they are portraying. As far as Catherine Tate and the like I know full well what they are trying to portray and what I see and hear I find disgusting. When one considers that with the programme before it "To the Manor Born" they are like chalk and cheese. To the Manor Born was good clean family entertainment although it could be said that the humour is now dated but I for one enjoyed it - with out offending Penelope Kieth where will Catherine Tate be when she reaches the age of Miss Kieth? Hopefully dead and buried with her filthy humour.

hi colin

unlike you I am not in the least offended by (bad language) or vulgar inuedo and find it very funny in the comedy sinario as could be gathered from my colection of videos by chubby brown, billy connelly, and jim davidson.

I also liked the two ronnies and morcambe and wise when they were performing and found some of their best comedy sketches where when the two ronnies were in drag and morcame and wise were in bed together,he,he.

My complaint is that the powers that be at the BBC seem to think that Joe Public is now into this vulgar, crude humour. I have seen a small section of a Chubby Brown video and was not impressed in it at all. However I have also seen a Jim Davidson video and found it quite amusing. Like wise Billy Connelly can be very funny on times. Another comedian I enjoy is Jethro. A very good series which was shown on BBC3 was "Two Pints of Lager & A Packet of Crisps". This series did not use foul language although there were inuendos which was left to the recipients interpretation. These comedians can behave when required and when on main stream TV they are family entertainment. I have subscribed to Sky but only the "History/General" package and the "family entertainment" package as my wife likes to watch the old films. Although there is no foul language in the soaps the likes of Eastenders and Coronation Street should also be scapped as it is bound to give the wrong ideas and impression to certain members of society and think that the life depicted in these soaps is common day behaviour.

My experience over many years now is that even with Freeview, there is usually about 2 hours broadcast TV I could be bothered to watch in a week.

No interest in:-

Sport

Soaps

Game Shows

"Reality" TV

Comedians with no wit

News that is all soundbites

etc

etc

So......

No TV.

Spend the licence money on getting DVD's of things I do want to watch.

Much enjoying Dr Who.

If you think TV is that bad - get rid of it. I's not compulsory to have one!

I am into crude vulgar humour I like it I think its dead funny.

chubby brown and bernard manning were deemed unsuitable for tv for years but played to packed out houses most of their careers where as some (clean) tv comics never ventured out on stage exept to do the odd pantomime. because they were not on the tv did not make them unpopular.

I do agree though that soaps should be taken off the tv what a total wase of time and money a view that I would guess will be unpopular as millions tune in every day to watch them AND YES some actually believe they ARE real life ask any soap baddie that.!!! (well documented cases)

Having read all of the comments in this thread, I feel that there is a far worse problem than the language of some of the publicity seeking, less inspiring acts that get shown. Like most on this forum, I've heard all of it before, and if it is just crudeness with no funny side, I'll turn it off. However, accross the road from me, a family of six, have an enormous flat screen, showing wall to wall cartoons from around 7am until the curtains close. Two of the children, both pre-school age, watch this drivel all day. The parent's claim that, because these two act like demented monkey's when ever they are let loose, that they have some atttention deficiency disorder. All cobblers I am afraid! Those kids are growing up with no communication with the world outside except via talking fish, flying cow's etc. A binning of the TV, and a few old fashioned clip's round where it hurt's would soon solve all this rubbish about various dissorders.

Hello Emmerson,

No I would not ditch the telly, because there is occasionally some very worthwhile and interesting viewing. At the same time I would not sit in front of it for hours vegetating, and I certainly would not sit two kids in front of it all day - then put their dippiness down to colourings in food etc.!!

Exercise your rights

Switch on or don't switch on

Watch or don't watch

Have a telly or don't have a telly

Take your telly with you in the caravan or don't take it

And if you do take it ,leave your curtains open or close them

Go on exercise your rights,or is there someone else in your house to consider?????

What I thought would have been a general statement of my opinion of Christmas TV entertainment has appeared to turn into a full blown and in some cases a heated debate. I did not want to cause any ill feelings between fellow contributors as I look upon this forum as a friendly place to discuss various topics. Alas it seems to have gone a bit OTT so to speak.

Regarding Catherine Tate - I just so happened to see the Christmas or later edition of Dr. Who and there was a female actress in this programme by the same name. Should it have been the same lady I will admit I was very pleasently surprissed at her acting ability - I know it was mid afternoon and way before the 9:00pm watershed but she did potray herself as an excellent actress. Looks therefore can be deceiving as she was nowhere like the foul mouthed person I saw late on Christmas day.

I can't comment on the Christmas night telly programmes because we went to my mates party as we do every year. It is the same Catherine Tate though. I think that she is an 'alternative' comedienne, but imho her act is the alternative to actually being funny.

Best program at christmas was "The real story of Jesus" on Channel 4 on christmas day. As a non-religious person I found it fascinating and very informative. Presented by a christian, it pretty much destroyed the traditonal christmas story and explored the similarity between Jesus and leaders in other religions including Hindu and Buddism and investigated the 36 mentions of Jesus in the Koran. The presenter concluded that he didnt care where Jesus was born or where he died or, really who he was, all that mattered was his teaching that we should try to help the oppressed and disadvantaged and this is something we can all do. Typical of channel 4 to show something controversial on christmas day though. Jim.

J&P - that sounded like an interesting programme and probably like all good programmes will not be repeated. I read a book a few years ago called "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" based on an Everyman series broadcast by the BBC in the early 1970s. The book was both very deep but also interesting - it did not ridicule religion but put alternative thoughts into the reader's mind. Unfortunately the programme series was never repeated as it would be easier to understand after reading the book.
