citroen C4 1.6 diesel with 6 speed esg

has anyone towed with the c4 with electronic gearbox system. sounds great as it reduces emissions. ford are to fit same into focus but it sound rather high tech to me and a second mortgage if it expires. I wonder if it is worth it just to save a few quid road tax............ rgds tony

I had one of the early (2003) Citroen C5's, and when it was actaully working, it was as fine a tow car as anything that I know of. Citroen filled the thing with toy's though, and this was it's Achilles heel - the electronic's on these 'extra's' were a constant scource of trouble and it was repeatedly in and out of the Dealer's. It would seem to me that Citroen have some fine ideas, but we are used as the test bed for them! I feel quite certain that the present day C5 is a good, reliable car, but if the system that you are considering on the C4 is anything other than very well proven, steer well clear!

Your views on the C5 are aptly true for the 2000_2003 models they were a nightmare. mine stopped at the top of hornflur bridge 2300hrs in amongst ferrry traffic. It was the best all rounder I have ever owned but unreliable. I have owned 6 Citroens witout disappiontmment but Citroen got it wrong with that model 2000 - 2003 but would not admit it. I have been towig tourers for 40 years britain and europe and have clocked up many thousands of miles. THE C5 was the safest and most stable of all of the cars I owned and towed with.

The BX and Xantia were good but C5 the ultimate tow car. It would cruise all day at 60-75 mph solid as a rock.

OK who is going to be first to stay you are breaking the speed limit and it is irresponsible to tow at such speeds.

The caravan was well sorted--- good tyres more than sufficient for weight of caravsn always less than 3 years old. shockers fitted, Tyrone safety bands (they do work blow out at 65mph) no problems--- AND--- a well balanced caravan not overweight plus don't tow when tired. It is common sense.
