I towed with a 51 plate 2.2 HDi Exclusive Estate for about 5 years and found it to be a first class tow car in every respect.

I just found servicing and parts a bit expensive. The final straw was when the computer showed high emissions and it was a fuel filter that needed replacing. Main Citroen dealer quoted

we have a 52 reg c5 2.2 hdi estate and it's great. there is bags of space, maximum comfort and it has citroen's legendary suspenstion which has six settings. also, when hitching up, there is a button in the boot to raise and lower the car in case the jockeywheel won't wind down anymore. this is only on the estate version though.

it does everything for you. automatic wipers, self-levelling suspension when you get in and on newer 53 reg onwards some have a rain sensor which puts the windows up automatically.

the 2.2 engine has plenty of pulling power, and it made it up a 1 in 4 hill with the caravan on the back and stopping halfway, in 3rd gear.

now we come onto economy! 40-49 mpg solo and 23-30 mpg towing. the most economical speed solo is 50 mph and if you keep it to that we have had 54 mpg on a motorway.

the new c5 that has just come out has a glass roof and a sensor to measure the length of the parking space you are getting into.

early c5's pre 2003 can run into problems. we have had a few but 004 onwards you should be fine.

I do...

I tow with a Citreon C5 2.2 SX HDI Hatchback - towing a Avondale 480/2.

Tows like a dream, bags of power (in fact have been known to tow a bit fast when i'm not really watching my speed). Stable never a hint of a snake.

A little bouncy on rough roads due to the suspension - but on normal roads lovely. The Self leveling suspension is a real bonus - its best to use it to hitch and unhitch (or it can fight you a bit).

Only downside really is it uses a special diesel additive which is a bit pricey (as is the particulate filter) See http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&h=&t=240199

So if you buy from a dealer make sure they tell you when it's due to be done.

Thanks for that Kent Mike. Worth knowing although we have already purchased the car on an 02 plate with 40k miles one owner and towbar with double electrics. So what we save on having a towbar fitted looks like at some point will have to refil the diesel additive. Three good independent citroen garages in my area so hopefully they could help.

PS second citroen I've owned xantia last time. Hope the C5 is as good as that was.

we have had a xantia too. when you get in the c5 it seems huge! we are on our 4th citroen. we have had two BX's, a Xantia and now a C5 and they seem to get better and better. glad you have found a c5 and i hope it works out well for you. but i havent heared about this diesel additive. i thought you only needed it for bio-diesel
