Hello everyone,

I own the above tow car and am hoping to buy a new Lunar Clubman, which has a MTPLM of 1311kg.

The unladen weight of my car is 1574kg (an 82% match) and theGTW is 3,154kg, however because the car is an automatic the max. towing weight is 1,300kg as opposed to the 1,500kg for a manual car.

My question, if I were to load the caravan to 1300kg, would it be a) a 100% match or b) an 82% because of the weight of the car?

Sorry about the rambling but I am getting different interpretations.

Hi Ron the 85% rule in relation to your outfit is not relevant as it only deals with the relative Weights of the vehicles as you say in your case it is 82%. your problem is power to weight ratio, which is near your cars limit @ MTW of 1300KG.If you can be sure that the van is loaded below the 1300Kg specified & any additional cargo is not overloading the car or GTW it technicaly

in my view should be ok. But I would be wary of any possible warranty or insurance implications as any excuse is enough for the to back out of a claim. I did a quick check on whattowcar.com & it implied that the combination was 10Kg over the top

Hi Tony,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

As you say the car is 10kg overweight. I spoke to the Caravan Club who advised me that the only way to prove the caravan is loaded to car's MTW is to have it eighed every trip and to keep the weighbridge printout as proof........methinks it will be easier to buy another car.

I was a wealthy man before I started caravanning!

Regards,

Ron.
