We have the above car, We were told by one caravan dealer we wouldn't beable to tow a caravan with this. Kerb weight 1240kg 85% is 1050kg so we're buying a van 915kg unladdened & we will be very careful what we put in it.

I'd be interested to hear from other picasso towers - we're new to this
 
Judging by the details of the kerbweight that you have given, I presume that you've got a Xsara Picasso and not the C4 Picasso. Although there is nothing wrong with going by the 85% figure, more importantly you really must check the maximum permissible towload, as specified by the car manufacturer, first. In your case, you are lucky as it's 1300kg which is higher than the 85% figure, but some cars have a limit which is below that and then you can't use the 85% value any more.
 
I too have a citroen xsara picasso. and am going to get my new second hand van on Friday. Does anyone have any advice. This will be my first caravan. Cheers in advance
