We hear much about the Cost of Living Crisis but today when in Pets At Home I saw a lady buying five 1.5kg packs of dog food at £11.99 per pack. My surprise was that it was breed specific, not small dog, large dog, sensitive dog etc but Chihuahua. On the shelves were similar packs for Sprocker, King Charles and many other breeds etc. I slunked away tail between my legs feeling incredibly guilty that my previous Collies and then Springers had working dog food ((no vat) and my current old lady is on Senior working dog food and not an expensive one at that.

Everyone has different priorities when it comes to saving money - SWMBO and I spend far less on clothes and groceries than many couples but I have no issue buying a big expensive SUV which guzzles derv.

I think the other thing that I was surprised at was different bags for different named breeds. I’ve had dogs virtually my whole life and cannot understand what a breed specific dog food actually comprises. Snake oil philosophy to part people from their cash.

Did you notice anything for Mongrels, ie, Heinz baked beans with mini sausages, Ham slices with carrots and cucumbers, and for Friday's tins of Sardines with tomato sauce. Lives well our little Harry.

Unfortunately not as I didn’t go into Tesco or similar. If I’m there next time I will see what they have for different humans IE Haggis for the Scots, pizza for Italians etc.

Today I have had to rebook my appointment with my dental hygienist, the dental surgery had only one available appointment before next year, given that the cost is £70 for a 30 minute clean. What COLC.

About the same as mine. Clearly I picked the wrong profession although staring into customers mouths for 30 years would be a turn off. Chiropodist perhaps?

Try animal Orthodontist, little Harry had another 4 teeth removed 2 months ago, £858, 2 hours under the anesthetic, including a clean of the others.

It amazes me the ability of animals to recover. My daughters very old deaf dog had most of her teeth out a few months ago. £1,500! Personally I thought putting to sleep would be kindest. She improved immediately. (But still deaf).

A neighbours cat had soft tissue cancer in one front leg. Leg removed without any bother. He does not even seem to miss it! £2,000, strangely exactly the same amount as their insurance will allow.

I think the media over hype many things to make it believable and people to comply with their way of thinking. Without going into politics we have all seen this happen in the past few months and most times as proven they get it horribly wrong!

Without going into politics I presume you are referring to support for a particular individual by some tabloids - notably the Daily Mail - that has brought a disastrous outcome?

Plenty of time for U-turns on this one - remember that the triple lock only applies to the basis state pension - it doesn't apply to the add-ons like graduated pension

I’m happy enough for my basic state pension to rise by 10.1%; received with thanks, but my Industrial Injury Benefit may only be 5% ( non taxable) but again gratefully received.

Mags had a dentist appointment for today, being a routine check up, booked over 6 months ago.
But on Sunday she developed toothache so rang dentist Monday morning to ask for emergency appointment, NO wait until your appointment on Wednesday (today).
BUT you can have a private appointment at £85.00 to sit in the chair plus the cost of any treatment.
Despicable policy, can get you in if you go private but not on the NHS and that is going to the same practice for over 40 years!!
And yes she suffered and went today.

I can see more and more people "jumping the queue" at both dentist and hospital treatment.
The way the NHS has and continues to suffer is a serious concern for all "ordinary" people. Things were NOT like they are today when we were young. Sadly I'd be surprised if they get better in the near future.

To refuse treatment under the NHS yet be able to offer it for a fee is deplorable. Really sorry to hear how your wife fell foul to such unethical treatment.

I recall that both my father and mother as ordinary working class people each paid for a private specialist consultation. By so doing they were seen far quicker for treatment than had they just patiently waited their turn on the NHS waiting lists. This was in the early 1960s so it’s not a new phenomenon. The problem though for dental treatment stems from the failure to update the NHS dental contract which has led to many dentists progressively moving away from NHS treatment to private treatment. We both use private dentist. Me I pay for each treatment and my wife uses Denplan, and we both get good service.

I don't understand the crisis in the dental sector - my dentist is advertising to take on patients, the operate under NHS pricing for all their patients whether NHS or not. My wife recently switched from her long-standing private dental practice to my practice - she was paying £180/year for their basic package and now paying £46 under NHS pricing.
