Hi All,

Some might agree and some may not agree on this point, but I find Hilary's cooking recipes in the magazine too spicy and strong.

My son cannot eat onions as it upsets his stomach, however, everything in the recipes always has strong and spicy ingredients in it.

Personally from my point of view I think the food looks lovely and would love to eat it but my son would never touch any of it.

As i expect a huge amount of caravanners do have children maybe some recipes that are more simpler and easier on the stomach would be more appropriate as well.

We do cook some of the meals mentioned in the mag but our son refuses to eat any of it.

I agree, like your son onions upset my stomach and I find that most people don't believe that this is a real problem. I have to read the packaging on ready made products and I ask in restaurants about which dishes have onions in them as it's not always obvious. On a few occasions the chef has made a dish for me omitting the onions. That's real service! It's funny but I can eat and do enjoy spring onions and garlic.

Avoiding onions must be a nightmare. I have coeliac disease and so cannot eat gluten (found in wheat barley oats and rye). It is a bit of a nuisance but these days food labelling is so much better for recognised allergens that it is much easier than it used to be. I bet onions are not as well labelled.

Hi You Guys.

That's a real shame that your problems affect the ability to enjoy Hillary's recipes which for us are very good.

Maybe you could let Hillary know if it is only onions or whatever that are a problem and perhaps she may be able to help.

Do any of the other organisations that you belong to offer recipes for persons with your problems? You may wish to share them with everyone else?

Cheers

Alan

Hi All,

I'll put in a request to Hilary for some non-spicy, child friendly food for a forthcoming issue. She's done burgers for the July issue, but I can't recall what the onion count was...

Regards and thanks for the feedback

HI All,

Thanks for the replies, My wife and I love some of the meals mentioned in the magazine and we always try not to use onions, but the taste just doesn't seem to be the same.

Nigel thank you for your input, would be great if you could do that !!

I think we previousely have made a spaghetti and meatball meal that was mentioned in one magazine but can't for the life of me remember where :-(

If anyone has any good recipes that are child friendly, and onion free, they would be really useful.

We really do find the onion allergy to be a problem, we even find that if there are onions in tin soup that this causes a reaction so when my wife shops she has to be very careful. It's reassuring to know that others suffer with this as well.

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian

Are Leeks the same problem as onions?

I just wondered if there are natural substitutes you could use in lieu of onions?

Cheers

Hi Alan,

Funny enough we did try these the other day and they were worse than onions if anything, he felt sick all day and lost all colour.

Thanks

Hi again Ian

You're right, I have to be very careful reading packets and cans. I had to stop buying a supermarket brand of baked beans as they changed the recipe to include onions. I searched the shelves and found the only brand which was onion free was Heinz (a lot dearer than own-brand, but I'm worth it!) My husband can eat onions but prefers not to as he finds the flavour can be overwhelming.

I heard a chef on TV the other day saying that he sometimes liked to use spring onions as the flavour was much more subtle.

Once in a supermarket I picked up a steak pie which was on the shelf alongside steak and onion pies and read the ingredient list to find that it too contained onions and onion was higher up the list which suggested that it had even more onions!

Most people think that I am just fussy when in fact I like to avoid being violently sick.

Do red onions have the same affect, as they are much milder in taste?
Yes they do, I've tried them. It's not the taste I don't like although some onions are very srong. My Mum solved the problem when I was younger by using leeks or using onions whole.
