Cordless strimmer

I got rid of my last two corded strimmers (Bosch) as neither auto feed was any good. So for some five years I have trimmed lawn edges using ordinary lawn shears and long handled edging shears. But it’s not quite so easy these days getting up and down. So I’m thinking of buying a battery lawn strimmer. In the rear garden there are three long edges bounded by either blocks or timbers. The front edges butt up to the block drive or garden borders.

Having a battery one is essential and auto cord would be very helpful providing it works reliably. Any recommendations based on experience would be welcome.

I have a cordless Hawksmoor hedge trimmer, one of Tool-Station's own brands and it's great. Well made with a decent battery life, I imagine their strimmer would be similar quality BUT I haven't tried one.

We have a Kress battery mower with a strimmer, hedge trimmer, and two small but different sized shear units. It is superb - Chinese parts but assemble in Germany. The batteries will last for 45 mins of mowing.
The strimmer uses the EU-style mini-reels that can extend the cord by pushing a small knob on the handle.

I have a Einhell battery strimmer. The battery also fits my lawnmower and hedge trimmer. All three bits of kit have been used many times this year so far without problems.
The strimmer has small plastic blades as opposed to cord. No issues so far.

My Einhell battery strimmer is 3 years old and no problems whatsoever

Thanks everyone. I’m quite attracted to one with the nylon blades. My daughter has a S&J mower which has given good service, but their strimmer is nylon cord with auto spooling. Must admit that my experience with Bosch auto spooling has perhaps distorted my view. How do others find auto spooling on their strimmers ?

My Black and Decker GL701 type5 is Ok , BUT for the first 15 minutes does not always auto feed, I have sprayed the reels and ratchet mech with dry silicon spray which helps. Genuine BandD reels helps. I am going to try going up a size of nylon cable to see if that helps. Due to the thinner cables tightening up on them selfs.
The hassle is not enough for me to change the Strimmer, nice balance and 240v power.

Interesting aspect of performance but 240v is not important to me as battery powered tools have come on in leaps and bounds and with lithium batteries the battery life is so much better than the old NiCad.

I've also got a mains powered Ryobi. It's useful for edging (rotating head) and areas where the Stihl is to big for.

Originally got it for Mrs V to use but it's quite heavy so I'm the only one using it.

Both the Stihl and Ryobi line feeds are good. With the Stihl you load your own line and can have a selection of sizes. The Ryobi has preloaded cassettes.

Stihl for heavy duty; Ryobi for occasional light work.

Well, on Saturday I decided to splash out on a cordless strimmer and lawnmower set, after praising my Hawksmoor hedge trimmer a few posts above I bought the strimmer/lawnmower set from the same manufacturer through Tool Station. What a load of rubbish, the strimmer was okay but the lawn mower stopped working after 2 minutes use. Both returned on Sunday and a refund given, now researching something decent!

Oh dear that’s not a good outcome. Toolstation are very good an accepting returns though as are Screwfix. I have both within 10-15 minutes walk. Takes longer to drive at some times.

We don't have much flat grass that needs mowing but when the Honda petrol mower died after many years of service we got a Cobra corded mower and it's been very good.

Don't know if they do strimmers.

Can't go wrong with Bosch. Good after sales service if you require a repair. We have an Ego cordless self propelled lawnmower.

I've got the MX46SPE Cobra, which is a beast to handle on the small front lawn but easy/quick to use on the large rear lawn - even when the grass is knee-high after a long caravan tour.

They don't appear to do strimmers

Exactly the same with us, I can see the roof of both of them from the upstairs window.

My last two Bosch corded strimmers were rubbish as the auto cord cassettes just kept jamming. When talking to customer service they weren’t very helpful and for second strimmer even had the gall to suggest I was using the wrong cord cassette. I explained that it was the one supplied with the strimmer and not some Ebay alternative. In the end I sent it back, and decided just to use garden shears and long handled edging shears.

Never had an issue with my Bosch corded or cordless strimmers and got many years use out of the corded one and currently still using the cordless strimmer. As said after sales service was brilliant when we had an issue with the battery on the cordless one.

We have a Hyundai 60v cordless mower and bought a trimmer that uses the same battery. Mower bought back in 2018, added the strimmer in 2019, and it's been great. Unfortunately they don't make the 60v version any more, I would love a new battery as the original is just starting to fade, but its lasted very well.
I would definitely buy the current equivalent.
