Having just returned from our holidays in Devon I'm now planning for next years summer hols.

I was just wondering about other peoples opinions on which is the better location,Cornwall or South Wales.

I usually always go to caravan club sites after having bad experiencies on commercial sites,I look forward to your replys cheers Mike.

hi, im the same as you i usually only go to caravan club sites. we have just come back from hayle cc site very nice site, little play area for the kids. only one shower/toilet block which you usually have to que for in the morning and the mens loos. i prefer the north of cornwall padstow,st merryn and harlyn bay but that was when i hired statics.

when we was in hayle we had a look at some site around the padstow area and they were okay.

when we was just coming out of falmouth towards truro we came across a site called carnon downs so we went and had a look. the site was better than some of the cc sites i have been on and the toilet/shower/family bathroom/shower rooms were fantastic.

the site had hard standing, grass pitches and fully serviced pitches with a picnic table. there was a field for the kids to play football away from the vans and a kids ad playground.

the site was beautiful very well kept ans it was like the grass had been cut by a hairdresser.

i love cornwall and will be back next year.

i havent been to south wales or pembrookshire as some call it but ive heard its as beautiful as cornwall, the beaches are as nice as north cornwall but its not a busy as cornwall.

how did you get on in devon?.

ive never been there. where did you stay and what was it like.

Hi we stayed at Ramslade c.c near Paignton it was in a nice area with paignton,Brixham and Torquay all on your doorstep.

The site itself was in need of mordernisation,we were told that it was getting a new toilet /shower block in November and also the access into the site was getting widend.

We had a lovely time here and the weather was great.

If i had to go back to this area i would choose to go to Hill head c.c site at Brixham,we had a look around this site and it was top quality ,everything looked brand new and so well looked after ,cheers Mike

jo
The pitches at Hillhead were alot bigger than Ramslade and they all seemed to be level ,they had proper hard standing and grass pitches .When we pulled up at the site it said on the board that it was full we went into the reception to ask if we could have a look around ,the warden said feel free and told us where the blocks were and so on .The site was lovely and wouldnt hesitate to book it in the future ,the site itself didnt seem congested and the pools , bar and shop, toilet blocks were immaculate

I would say Cornwall everytime, but then I do live there!

A couple of really nice quality sites that we use regularly are Polmanter at St Ives and River Valley at Relubus. Both fantastic and out the way.

Biggest problem with Cornwall is peak season. You cannot move on the roads and some of the beaches.

There are still a few 'hidden' fantastic beaches that never get crowded (Lelant).

Also most commercial sites tend to 'make hay while the sun shines' and fill the sites to overflowing,, usually trying to fill up every single spare patch of grass with a tent of some kind.

But saying that we went to France this year and the site was crammed to overflowing. Opposite us there were 9 people staying on one pitch, 1x Caravan, awning, gazebo, 2 tents and 3 cars. Completley unnaceptable and unfair on us......we couldnt move! Safe to say we wont be going there again.

In my experience, Cornwall is more expensive. South Wales has some nice beaches if that is your thing, also some large cities within a stone throw. Pembrey Country Park has a beautiful sandy beach and is spotlessly clean. There is a CC site at the entrance. The village of Bury Port is a few miles away, the town of Llanelli a little further with Swansea just beyond that. In my opinion, the Gower Peninsular is over rated. While there are some spectacular views, the beaches are nothing special and there is very little else to do. Shops are few and far between and the only way to avoid getting ripped off is to take a 30 minute drive into Swansea. Carigan Bay is very nice, but the roads are not very good. There are some nice places around Pembrokeshire, including Tenby, Saundersfoot and Pendine where the land speed records used to be set.

I too could be considered prejudiced, however, being from South Wales!

Make that Cardigan Bay, not Carigan

We love Cornwall, particularly the CC sites at Godrevy Park (Hayle) and Trewethett Farm (nr Boscastle). Wasn`t overly impressed with the Merrose Farm (not enough facilities for number of vans) or Looe ( too cramped).

We visited Freshwater East in Pembrokeshire this year and was mightily impressed. The walking and beaches were the equal of North Cornwall but the place was less crowded and not as commercialised. I was very pleasantly surprised, and will definately be going back.

Hi,

A big positive vote for the Caravan Club site at Pembrey, usual CC standards, large grass pitches, and free (if you walk) access to the Country Park - about 15 minutes to the beech through the park - then you have access to mile upon mile of clean sandy beech.

The south coast of Wales has good motorway and A road access, so traffic isn't a problem.

If you don't need to entertain children on the beach - then I'd recommend Pencelli Castle near Brecon - it's a commercial site that has won "Camp site of the year" (Wales) from the AA in 2006 and other years, numerous "best site" awards from Practical Caravan, and is even better than a CC site for facilities - including free drying rooms - the owners are great and the location is stunning. It's an inland site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons - great for walking and exploring the hills - with a wonderful pub around 100 metres from the site entrance.

I live in South Wales. There is no comparison,I would choose Cornwall every time if it's a coastal holiday you're after.

If however you want something else then don't go to Cornwall, there isn't much else.
