Have this weird corrosion on the cabinet hinge. This is one of the high cabinets beside microwave. No moisture.

Any ideas?

Zinc die castings such as that display some awful corrosion occasionally, when you replace it spray the new one with a few coats of clear lacquer to give it a bit more corrosion resistance.

Don't you need to use a specially formulated laquer to prevent corrosion or is that for when there is an issue with bi-metals? We have that sort of corrosion issue on the leading edge of the bonnet on our Jeep.

It’s just to try and stop moisture getting near any of the casting that is poorly plated. Zinc castings can corrode beneath the plating, car hinges, emblems etc from the 40’s and 50’s used to go pitted beneath the chrome plating.

Stopping aluminium corroding is another thing altogether. The best product is epoxy primer, it has superior adhesion properties, corrosion inhibitors and is waterproof.
