cost of fuel too high?

We know only too well that rising fuel costs, or tax, hits our hobby very hard. Those of us who drive in Europe also know the UK is much harder hit than most othe EU members.

Never thought of myself as a rebel but I have signed the latest fuel protest petition to the government and thought it might interest some of you also.

Go to www.fuelprotest.com where you can make a decision and a few clicks puts your name on the petition.

Of course if you do sign you can also do as I have done and send the link to everybody in your address book - a snowball effect could mean many millions of names on the petition and you never know.

Even if it only stops the next tax rise due in April it will achieve something.

An admirable but futile notion.

This Government has destroyed the economy to such an extent that if we all failed to fill up for one week it would be bankrupt. The level of taxation on fuel (well, the motorist in general, really) is obscene, but necessary to fund illegal wars, MPs expenses, unmarried mothers/illegal immegrants/workshy/olympics etc,etc. You want fuel? You pay as much as they can squeeze out of you, in addition to Road Fund licence,VAT on the car and fuel, insurance premium tax et.al.

You work, you get hammered. Simple.

I work in Waste Management and see what other `stealth` taxes have done to industry and its costs. For instance, I remember the time before `landfill tax`. In some instances the cost of taxation per tonne is greater than the actual disposal costs. Fron nothing the taxation level is now

We do have one of the highest fuel taxes in the world but if it was reduced then spending on health, education, defence etc would have to reduce or you'd all have to pay more income tax.

As an astute investor with investments generating tax-free income I'd really like fuel at 50p/litre and basic income tax at 35% but no-one else would !

Roger, no-one minds the spending on NHS, etc. What we object to is the waste in these organisations, and the other money eaters that Angus lists. If MPs cut their expenses and pensions it would be a great help.

I totally agree with Emmerson. The waste in government depts is endemic. At the end of the tax year local government will be spending money on pointless projects to use up the cash, so they can claim more next. Schools employ Newly qualified teachers yet waste tons on supply teachers from agencies. Agencies supplying staff have grown, rather to pay agency than pension to employee. NHS waste all over the place. The services have very old kit eg recent Nimrod cash. We support unpopular wars, yet have superb servicemen/women who get poorly compensated.

The facts go on and on, MP's are a joke.

We need to adopt the attitude of the French, that is the government work for us, not the other way around.

To achieve that you need to get people to vote in elections - governments in this country are elected with only 25% of available votes as 50%, more in local elections, don't bother voting.

Politicians think, with some justification, that they can do what they want. If we didn't have media crusades and witch-hunts, can you imagine how corrupt our politics would be?
