I have just heard a tale (surely it must be one) that someone is considering towing a Kia Sorento behind a motorhome (small one I might add)!!! I said it would be illegal, but I doubt that he would reach the main road as the said person has to drive up a steep hill first. I thought itmust be an April Fools joke but it is too late for that.

If you go to the States you will see Winnibagos and the like towing SUV's behind them all the time and to an American the orento is Small!

They do have bigger roads though and it's fair to say everything seems bigger there including the food portions!

The unbraked trailer limit of 750 kg would prevent you from towing anything but a microcar in UK unless you rigged up a system to operate the towed vehicles brakes.

Nothing to stop you towing it on a braked trailer though as long as you didn't exceed the GTW for your tow tug.

Personnally I don't think it's for me though.

David - even micro cars exceed the 750kg limit because it's applied to the gross weight, not the kerb weight.

Just wondering - since it is not allowed to have passengers in a 'trailer', could you actually exclude say 4 x 75kg (300kg) from the gross weight, since as a trailer it cannot carry them?

No, you can't exclude 4x 75kg because you would be permitted to fully load the "trailer" with baggage - nice try!

If this is genuine , there might be technicalities of towing a 4x4 in this manner.

Not sure but there might be something that they would not be able to or would have to do something to the car to make it possible.

I know the recovery industry has some issues with towing 4x4s with all wheels on the road but cant remember the specifics

Automatics can't be towed with driven wheels on the ground. Some 4wd vehicles can't be towed with 4 wheels on the ground or 2.

My own Subaru Outback 4-speed autobox has a fuse connection to convert to front-wheel drive which can then be towed by lifting the front, but other Subaru transmissions are different.

I have a 96 Landrover Discovery automatic and I have towed that on a A frame back to the garage for servicing when my wife's at work it is done quite easily by putting the transfer box into neutral. no problems at all , my 2004 Isuzu Denver Rodeo automatic has a electronic box for switching between 2 & 4 wheel drive you can also place the gear box into a neutral mode for towing..
