Hi Lollie,
Not 100% sure on this but I think when buying a used van it is up to you. On a CRIS form there is a notification slip that the previous owner should have sent to CRIS notifying them that he/she was no longer the owner. They might have passed that slip onto the dealer for them to attend to. Notifying CRIS is not compulsary so the previous owner might not have done it. That being the case when you try to register it Cris will contact who they have registered as legal owner asking them to confirm if they have sold the van.
Hope this helps, no doubt some one will be along shortly with a more comprehensive answer.
Robert

This situation realy does need to be cleaned up by the caravan dealership community.
I had the same trouble. I bought a 2nd hand van via a well known forest of dean dealership PB. The van was CRIS registered by the previous owner. But the dealer had not done anything about transfering registration to me. Nor had the previous owner completed their change of ownership trabsfer notification. CRIS were very quick to point out that if they thought the van showed up as a dodgy deal, they would notify the police and not us.

So as you can imagine, being a fulltime caravanner we were very much at risk of loosing our "home" then of cause there was the difficulty of not having a "permanent address". I got round that bit by using the wife's mothers address which is the same thing for our car log book and insurance. (Just to satisfy stuffy english law).

So then we paid the tranfer fee reluctantly and waited 4 long weeks just incase the rozzers came round with their 4X4 to nick our 8K home on wheels from under our feet. Eventually after having to show a copy of the recipt from PB to quantify that we had bought the van legit and a copy of my driving license to validate our address, we got the all clear.

IMO, the caravan dealerships should join the tufty club and all agree to do the same method of sale or purchase for CRIS regiterable vans. What would be even better would be for the Vehicle Licensing Authority to devise a registration system for all trailers. Now unfortunately that would probably end up with good old Joe Public having to pay for the pleasure. But if that brought a decent regulated and protected caravan purchase environment then so be it. Because it is a right royal pain when you have your honestly bought van reposessed and you have to fight hammer and tong through civil courts to try to get your hard earned back.

CRiS caravan registration is not a legal requirement and your insurance company wouldn't nullify your caravan insurance because you haven't completed the registration form.
Obviously the insurers need the V.I.N. which will be the same as the CRiS number so that they can issue a policy document but the CRiS scheme is similar to the HPI scheme used for cars and has no legal standing whatsoever. The CRiS scheme is a commercial operation, CRiS registration is a desirable selling point when you come to selling your caravan but don't postpone your holiday because of it.
The only benefit that you will gain from CRiS registration would be the knowledge that your caravan hasn't previously been an insurance write off and that it is not subject to a previous unpaid HP agreement, if the caravan had been stolen when you bought it CRiS would notify the police rather than yourself unless you'd had the hpi check done before you bought the caravan.
If you wanted to do a CRiS check before completing the purchase it will cost £14.95 and it can be done over the telephone or you can complete the CRiS registration over the phone for £12

Hi Uncle Jack

can you here the argument from here between me and OH you know the one that isnt trying to field all these insurance quotes, he isnt 2mins for saying well if thats the case no holiday, i cant print my response, but it goes along the lines well he can always holiday at his mothers lol thank god for that at least i can go on holiday knowing i wont null and void the insurance(which isnt done YET) down for a ring back from CCC which will be tomorrow now, but everything seems to be about £250 so for that price i'll be stick to CCC guarenteed value policy.and at least i know this year there will be no more nonsense and some peace of mind!! well we can pray!

CRIS is a commercial enterprise, managed by a company called EQUIFAX, they charge you to hold your details on their database, if you buy your van from a legitimate dealership, and retain the receipt, you have nothing to worry about. EQUIFAX are the same company that hold credit reference info on everyone, they do it for profit, not for your benefit.
Enjoy your new van. Best wishes.

Parksy but I think Lollie says her insurance asks if the caravan is CRiS registered, don't know how picky they would be if something happened before her registration was through. Might be better to be on safe side and mention the possible delay to the C&CC insurer when they give Lollie her call back?

Hi Rob
Yep i think i will def mention to CCC tomorrow just in case, because you know what insurance companies are like for technicalities.
Interesting and actually very annoying to read that the company belongs to equifax, is it not about time there was some kind of legit DVLA type of thing with caravans. i am absolutely fed up with these vultures at these credit ref companies seeming to think it is alright for them to hold ever piece of what i consider private information on me, for no benefit other than to themselves.its about people like ourselves and CC and CCC lobbied for a proper caravan register, god that really is bleeping maddening !!

Hi steve
yes i thank god we bought from a dealer this time the previous caravan cris check we never bothered with because it was 10yr old,but i rather think it was pure ignorance on our part.
Dont envy your ordeal at all, it must be impossible to just do some basic stuff like road tax and insurance when they demand a permanent address, which isnt exactly very helpful for people in our communities who are perfectly legit, and want to stick by the book, but choose this way of life which is there given right

Strange that calling Parksey Uncle Jack because in the one country where I lived formally if you called someone "Jack" and it was not remotely connected with their name, more than likely you would end up with a black eye as it was a very insulting racist remark. Goes to show the different cultural backgrounds from one English speaking country to another. LOL!

Hi Surfer
But this refers to father Jack his avatar from father Ted, and me not calling parksy by his real name, just a standing joke now as you know! And the very fact that this good gent along with others took me under his wing during that rather sad fiasco.
Dont like the sound of said country, and thankfully i am not aware of it,
Must make mental note not to visit!! curious now right enough
