Hi we have problems with our swift vans with the hartel door lock sticking. Hartel are looking at my dads van and mine due in for service in a cpl of weeks. to cure the sicking inner door handle you need to strip the lock.the reason they go tight is not hard to see when stripped. the interferance fit with the different temps affect the housing and the housing and shaft become tight heres the fix-

1- open door and secure

2- remove the semi round cover with hartel on with a small screw driver. be carefull not to brake the locating lug.

3- with an edge of a stanly knife remove the plastic red screw cover and the same with the green.

4- unscrew the 4 screws

5- with the lock in your hand turn upside down and you will see a circlip.

6- remove circlip and ther will be 2 shims (washers) remove the shims and remove the handle.

7- make sure the actual lock moves free and the spring is in good cond.

8- with some sand paper clean the actual housing. keep trying the knob to make sure you get a nice turning motion between knob and hosuing.

9- clean and lube and rebuild.

10- when screwing back onto caravan tighten the screws opportsit and refit red/green plastic covers and hartel logo.

11- test door handle. locking should be smooth and inner door knob will return from the open postion

This job will only take an hour tops

hope this helps

As an update to the problem with sticking Hartel door locks The lock on my Abbey Vogue had started to stick and became progressively worse. I posted the details of the problem on the Swift caravans section of the Caravan Talk forum.

This would appear to be a common fault with a particular batch of locks because when several others reported similar problems Kath Powell from Swift Leisure replied that Swift had consulted the lock suppliers and they had agreed to replace the locks either for dealers to replace them or as a d.i.y. fit should the owners prefer.

Kath gave the email address for us to contact the supplier directly, which I did on Monday.

In my email I outlined the problem and gave my name address and home telephone number and within ten minutes Richard from Myriad products who supplied the lock to Swift rang to ask which side the hinge for the door is on and whether I wanted my dealer to fit the replacement lock or if I wanted to fit it myself.

I chose the latter option and I'm very pleased to report that Fed Ex delivered the replacement catch this morning, so thank you and well done to Kath at Swifts and to Richard at Myriad Products.

Unfortunately C.T. forum is experiencing some difficulty at the moment and is unavailable so I've taken the liberty of giving the email address for Richard at Myriad Products here and also the Swift Leisure enquiries address for any interested party to copy and paste. They are

Swift:

enquiries@swiftleisure.co.uk

Myriad Products who will replace faulty locks:

rtoon@miriad-products.com

Hope this helps

Thanks, Parksy, for your info.

As my Abbey Vogue has the problem I emailed Richard at Miriad Products this morning. This afternoon their engineer turned up and fitted a new catch. How's that for exceptional service ? I know we are only about 15 miles away from where Miriad Products are based but even so this sort of service is fabulous. Many other companies should take note. We must support companies like this that help out in this way.
