Can anybody give me some advice on using a tow bar mounted cycle carrier. We have two adult bikes which usually travel on the roof, but we would like to take the bikes and a roof box. Can you use tow bar carriers when towing?. we have a Nissan X-Trail and baily champagne series 6.

Hello Darren,
There are a number of things that you should be aware of.
The maximum nose load that the Nissan X trail can handle. Some models are as low as 75Kg and others only 100Kg I do not know what your specific vehicle is rated to.
You must be able to accommodate the combined caravan nose weight and the cycle carrier (and cycles) weight within the tow balls maximum load. Most people find it difficult to keep a solo caravan within the limit for most cars, so a cycle carrier as well is often too much.
Be wary of the physical clearances between the caravan and the cycles when turning or entering ramps.
Your rear lights and number plate must be visible - sometimes a trailer board is necessary to ensure that you are legal.
You must also be aware that for some vehicles the rear projection of a cycle carrier may require some other marks and indications to warn other road users.
Its not impossible, and for a solo car it is generally OK but you will need to check carefully the capacity and the actual loads if you wish to try a caravan at the same time.

I carry 2 bikes on a Witter towbar mounted carrier on my dCi X Trail
whilst towing with no problems.The one thing I have to do is remove the jockey wheel as it fouls the bikes on sharp turns.If you have a van with a high nose weight you obviously have to be careful as John L says.

Not long after I started caravanning I decided to take two bikes on a trip. I had missed my turning and was dreading a long detour to put it right. Despite my inexperience in reversing I decided to bite the bullet, and, to my suprise , executed the perfect reverse around a corner and off we set in the right direction again.
When we arrived on site I realised my perfect right angle reverse had buckled the front wheel on my brand new bike. Beware !

Thanks for that, think i may see about a narrow roof box for some extra luggage space and then i should be able to put the bikes next to it.
