Damaged coupling.

Advice please! Ive never had a caravan but am very interested in a 'classic' 1970's model Ive been offered, the trouble is Ive been told the coupling mechanism is 'damaged' (don't know whats wrong with it.....seller just said 'it cant be towed, the coupling doesn't work, you'd have to transport it'). Does this mean the van is useless or can this be repaired/replaced? Apologies if this is a 'stupid' question!

Thanks.

Its not a stupid question if you need to know the answer

Its just 2 bolts to change the coupling.

Have a look on www.al-ko.com for pictures of couplings.

Or www.towsure.com for more variety

Hello Kenneth,

Johns advice is sound but I would add that you must ensure the coupling is replaced with the right model, so it correctly actuates the braking system. I would suspect that if the coupling is damaged, that it would be wise to have the brakes and wheel bearings checked as well.

Thanks to you all for your advice. It transpired the van was in far worse condition than first appearance suggested and so I did not buy after all.

Probably just as well. I would assume the van would be fitted with a 2 inch coupling which will not be suitable for use with the 50mm towballs currently in use.
