I use two different methods.

1. This is good around dinner time. I explain that I don't have time to speak, but if the caller can give me their home number, then I will ring them later at home when I have time, no doubt when they are about to eat their dinner. When they object I just keep asking for their home number. They soon hang up.

2. Much simpler. I say that I am busy, and can they hang on for a minute. I then put the phone on the table and carry on with my life.

Had some really irritating bloke phone me about double glazing once, but I heard noises in the background which made me think he was ringing from home. So afterwards I dialled 1471 and he hadn't witheld his number!

A few weeks later I was working at night, so I stopped at a phone box miles from home and phoned him up at about 0130 and asked him if he wanted any double glazing.... I can't post the answer on here.

Another thing they seem to say these days is we are not selling you anything and I reply thats ok because I am not buying, and I then hang up.

That's always a good one, I say 'I'm just going to get a pen' and put the handset on the table and leave it there.

It serves two purposes, not only does the salesperson hang on for what seems like forever (45 minutes I recorded once) but if you have a teenager in the house, it stops incoming calls getting through from their annoying mates.

Just register with the Telephone Preference Service - 0845 070 0707 - it takes a month or two to be properly effective, but since then I have not received a single cold call.

If I did, I would point out that they are committing a criminal offence.

Simple, permanent, and effective.

I normally soeaky no inglish and ask them to give me number they want from memu - it usually works but sometimes backfires if a friend calls.
