Unfortunately I don't think the moderators can 'close' a topic. This forum software appears to be more of the James Watt stream driven type - and only deletions or removal of the whole topic can be done by the moderators.

I would have thought that this is just 'boys arguing the toss'.

Perhaps, as a lady who tows, I could say that towing with a well-matched outfit is just like a comfy bra - you don't know it's there if it's a good fit! That might turn their thoughts to more interesting 'figures' than figures of speech!
This should really get them going Val A !!!!!!

That's a great analogy Val, not that I'd know how a comfortable bra feels you understand!

I think that Rod opened the topic to spark a bit of debate and banter on a wintry afternoon and theres no harm in it as long as things don't get out of hand.

It all brings the summer months round.

I have to admit, I agree with the use of that 'figure of speech' (also 'tows like a dream' ;-)) - it doesn't tell you anything useful.

When I was looking to buy my first van and towcar recently, I just kept reading 'tows like a dream' and 'can't even tell the van is there' - doesn't help you in trying to decide on what to get.

When I finally bought my car and did my first tow, I was amazed at how glaringly obvious it was that I was towing a caravan - apart from the constant tale-gater, acceleration was non-existent and the corrugated iron that sometimes pass for roads in this country regularily reminded me that I was towing something.

Unless you're towing a bicycle with a 32-ton arctic, I could never imagine using the 'figure of speech' of 'I can't even tell the caravan is there' - it's just not even vaguely accurate!

Gotta go - still got this months 'Pedants Periodical' to read ;-)

Figure of speech was taught in junior school when I was a lad. In fact only 10 minutes before coming on here we were talking with our neighbour and that old faithfull "First Aid In English" was mentioned. I went into the study and got my wife's copy from when she was a school girl and on pages 76 and 77 are swveral examples. Ah the good old school days have come in handy.

Val A.. those ARE more interesting 'figures' than figures of speech and it did gab my attention!

So to continue the topic..

Grumpys.. did you know that all women can remove their bras without removing their tops.

So you can't be sure whether they are still there or not..

just like some caravans apparently!!

I've said it myself on numerous occasions.

The reason being, the first tow car I used was soooo underpowered. The car I have now is well up to the job, hills etc no problem.

What an uplifting experience this thread is.

A Triumph over the Laws of Gravity. Never have so many cups been filled with delight.I was so impressed I crossed my heart with joy.

Bravissimo I shouted as I crossed the Severn suspension bridge yesterday. All that tension keeping things in place. What a miracle of modern physics with all those underwired bits.

Now I'm honestly trying to keep abreast of things here but if I've boobed please ask Lutz for a technical assessment on weights and size. LOL

Cheers

My first impression when reading this posting was the Triumph car - damn good tug the Triumph 2000 - I presume that the reference was not to the car or the motor bike by a similar name.
