Its my first trip on foreign soil next month and I was wondering where best to fill up, in Folkestone before the ferry or in Calais. I am travelling on a Sunday morning arriving at Calias approx. 10.45am. I have been looking at the opening times for the Hypermarkets and most are closed on a Sunday.
I am travelling down to Caen on the A16 / E402.

Any assistance much appreciated

……..you can use Auchan Calais.
The fuel station has 24/7 card operated pumps and accepts UK cards and there is plenty of room for caravans.
The co-ordinates of the fuel station entrance are 50.942935 1.809644
You can enter these co-ordinates into the search bar of Google Maps to see a map of the location.
The fuel station is on the opposite side of the road to the Hypermarket.
Take note….. do not remove the fuel nozzle from its holster until instructed to do so
by the pump on screen instructions.

When we arrived 2 weeks ago diesel was €1.49 on motorways and €1.31 in supermarkets right across France. If you arrive on a Sunday the cheaper ones will be hard to find as they tend to close in the afternoon, unless you find a credit card operated one. We paid €1.49 for convenience, as it is still cheaper than the UK (as has been said).

Diesel in Spain is €1.24 whether on a motorway or not, and in Portugal it is €1.39.

Have a good trip.

There is a service station on the A16 headed south shortly after you join it. Being your first trip you might not want to start looking around for supermarkets or trying out 24/7 ones that you may or may not be able to use with an english card just to save a few euros.

There's a truck stop just off the dual carriageway as you leave the ferry at junction 3 before you join the A16. Take the exit and then turn left on the roundabout under the road you've just left and follow that around into the industrial estate and you'll see the Elf fuel station on the right. There's diesel pumps and a small shop where you can buy bread, etc if you need it. Straight through drive with the caravan. Not as cheap as the supermarkets but better prices usually than motorway stops. Stick "Elf Calais" into Google and you'll see it on the map as "B"

….yes I agree with john_miller this is another good fuel stop in Calais.

I did not suggest it to the OP as I do not know if it is open on a Sunday morning.

I think it's open 24/7. Several times I've filled up there in the early hours. NOTE. The pumps won't work until they have your passport or credit card.

Not clear from where you are travelling. If you are using the Shuttle (Folkstone) then when you exit onto the A16 towards Boulogne you have two options: (1) turn off the autoroute at the next exit following signs to Cocqelles, drive through the village and you will come to a retail park (look for a big red roof emblazonned with Buffalo Grill on your right.)The Auchan petrol station is just before it. (2) Have enough fuel to get you the 30+ miles to Boulogne. Take the exit for St Omer, then the first slip into 'Centre Commercial.' You will find the Auchan petrol station on the left but you need to go to the second island to get into it. As of last Thursday diesel here 1.27.4/Litre. Using French automated pumps is straight forward enough even if you don't speak French, but many (curiously often not Auchan) will give you the choice of or directly speak to you in English.
Note that if you are going south of Boulogne the autoroute is chargeable (peage) from this point as far as Abbeville whereafter it is free down to Brionne. If you don't want to pay follow the RN1.
