We are going to longleat for a few days in June. First of all would appreciate some directions coming from north,(M5). Is site hard to find?

we are thinking of taking the vip tour of the park.

views from anyone who has done this would be appreciated

hope to hear from you soon

Fred, personally I would use the M4 and come off at junction 17 Chippenham. From chippenham stay on A350 and Longleat is vai a roundabout on the Warminster by pass.

Sory can't help with the rest as I havn't been there for 15 years or more.

Hi Fred

I agree with ray(c) whatever you do do NOT go through Bath as the A36 is closed at Limpley Stoke and the diversions are through narrow lanes. The best way to tour the park is on the double decker safari bus,you pay extra but it is worth it.

Spent a very pleasant and enjoyable 5 nights there a couple of weeks ago. We also approached from the North and as others have advised came from M5 onto M4. The site warden had warned us of the road works at Bath so we carried onto junction 17 then down the A350. Follow the signs for Longleat and at the roundabout follow signs for coach parking. The site is quite a bit in off the road, you drive right past Longleat House and go round in a big curve to come to the site. The site entrance is only about two hundred yards from the House (eventually.. it is a big curve).

The V.I.P. tours round the safari park seem to be done in land rover discovery vehicles (or something very similar). I saw them parked at the site entrance with some advertising on them. You can also go round in the double decker bus, but then you are restricted to a timetable. I found using my own vehicle was fine, you can stop and view when and for as long as you want and not when a bus driver decides. I did miss out the monkey enclosure though, during our trip we saw other vehicles which obviously had visited that enclosure - rubber window trims hanging off!

I would recommend the Passport tickets and if possible, depending on the length of your stay, visit the attractions during the week rather than at weekends. Much quieter.

Anything specific, please ask.

Robert

Hi Fred,

Even if there were no roadworks I would still go down the A350 instead of going through Bath. Its much less stressful with a caravan in tow. I'm going there at the end of June too and I intend to go to M4 J17.

Heres an extract from my route planner:

09:12 4.9 Merge onto M5

09:41 34.3 At Exit 15, keep LEFT onto Local road(s) 0.3 mi M4 / M32 / M48 / London / Bristol / S. Wales

09:41 34.6 Bear RIGHT (West) onto Local road(s) 0.3 mi M4 / M32 / London / Bristol

09:41 34.9 Merge onto M4 20.2 mi

10:01 55.1 At near Stanton St Quintin, stay on M4 (East) 0.1 mi

10:02 55.2 At Exit 17, keep LEFT onto Ramp 0.2 mi A350 / A429 / Chippenham / Cirencester

10:02 55.5 At roundabout, take the FOURTH exit onto A350 2.8 mi

10:05 58.2 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 [West Cepen Way] 3.8 mi

10:11 62.0 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 4.0 mi

10:17 66.0 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 [Beanacre Road] 0.6 mi

10:19 66.6 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 [Western Way] 1.1 mi

10:22 67.7 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 5.7 mi

10:28 73.4 At roundabout, take the FIRST exit onto A350 [Westbury Road] 2.0 mi

10:32 75.4 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A350 [Trowbridge Road] 0.5 mi

10:33 75.9 Turn LEFT (South-East) onto A350 [Haynes Road] 0.2 mi

10:33 76.0 Turn RIGHT (South-West) onto A350 [Warminster Road] 3.2 mi

10:39 79.2 At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A36 1.5 mi

10:41 80.7 At roundabout, take the THIRD exit onto A362 0.7 mi

10:42 81.4 Enter roundabout 43 yds

10:42 81.4 Arrive Longleat House

We live in Bristol and will be in Longleat in July.

Ditto other comments - if you are not local and do not know the backways (not always an advantage!) stick to the Chippenham route and follow signs for Frome, Salisbury and it will not be too long before you come across clear signs to Longleat.

It is off the main dual carriageway that bypasses Frome.

If you do use a satnav keep to the main routes and do not let it divert you through any of the village or town centres in this area - they can be murder if you are towing.

By the way, when arriving at Longleat does everyone go in at the entrance opposite Centre Parcs and drive down the steep hill. I did this the first time but I'm not looking forward to doing it again as its hard on the brakes and/or clutch on the car - trying to hold a car and caravan back from rolling down the hill VERY quickly.
