Just been offered a 2001, disco, diesel,45000miles, excellent con,£7500.Sounds like a fair price but since I have not considered buying one this is a bit sudden and need a quick decision. Have heard all the pros and cons regarding 4x4 in general.Towing with a mondeo 130TDI at the moment, excellent but on the border line for kerb weight on a Vanmaster.

Hugh, the car is six years old; just the age where disco's start to become troublesome.

i sold my disco at this age as problems where becoming a weekly ritual allthough it was the less well built tdi 300 model as opposed to the one you are looking at, but then again the 2001 model was basically the same car only with a bmw engine.

Me personally i would leave it well alone even more so now that diesel seems to be going up a penny every other day, your mondeo will probably return about 40 to 50 to the gallon the disco will be half that.

My common sense is telling me the same but the price and the condition, is giving me itchi fingers.

For info Icemaker NO BMW engine has ever been fitted to a Discovery 1989 -94 200tdi and 3.5 v8 petrol 1994-98 300 tdi and 3.9ltr v8 petrol and the K series 2ltr petrol.then in the series 2 Disco there is the TD5 and the 4 ltr V8 petrol All these engines are Rover units

But the Range Rover p38 has a 6 cylinder BMW deisel and the latest L322 range rpver has a 3ltr BMW engine.

I think your are confusing the Freelander TD4 engine with the TD5. The TD4 is a BMW unit.

But the TD5 coded "Storm" engine is a Rover manufactured unit.

Made at Lode Lane Solihull. This engine was developed when BMW owned Rover.

Just visit the Landrover Forums or www.Td5alive.com for further info if you do not beleve me I only used to work at L/R

I`m with G.Stockton, never even heard of any suggestion that the TD5 was anything to do with BMW.

The following is from a specialist LR website. Although you`ll always get some that try to attach some cachet by association with BMW. Not on this one.

2495cc turbodiesel, overhead valve, 200TDi and 300TDi: Second time lucky for Land Rover. The lessons learned from the 2.5TD were incorporated into the new TDi engines available in the Defender and Discovery from 1990. The cylinder block still looked familiar (although strengthened internally with an aluminium ladder frame bolted to the bearing caps) but the cylinder head was all-new and a direct injection fuel system was used. These engines have gained an impressive reputation for power and durability. Defender engines produced 107bhp, Discovery engines (with different manifolding and a couple of other small changes) 111bhp. The 300TDi has a single serpentine drive belt for alternator, power steering etc, better soundproofing and a few small internal differences compare to the 200TDi. Power outputs of the two engines are identical. Though no longer offered in Europe (due to emissions regulations) the 300TDi remains available in some export markets.

2495cc turbodiesel, 5 cylinder, TD5: New and much stricter Euro emissions regulations for diesel engines led Land Rover to develop an all-new engine for the second generation Discovery, and this also found its way into the Defender. The TD5 features electronic control of the fuel injection system (with a control unit under the driver's seat), 'drive by wire' throttle and other refinements, all aimed at minimising exhaust emissions. Early reaction was mixed: the TD5 was much easier to stall than the earlier diesel engines (a characteristic shared by many of the latest generation of environment-friendly diesels) and there were reports of oil pump failures, cylinder head problems and other reliability issues - but not on anything like the scale of the 2.5TD fiasco in the Eighties. In any case, these issues appear to have been resolved, and the TD5 has turned out to be a lovely engine - much smoother than the old TDi, and it sounds better too.

the main difference between a 200 an a 300 is the adoption of a timing belt instead of a noisy chain, but i know what i prefare.the 200 can trace its roots right back to a 2 1/4 apart from these were indirect injection, which in turn was a bmc.somehow looking at LR past i dont think they,d have the financal resouces to develope a new unit.look what there using now 2.4 ford duratorque.so whats the td6 in rangerover?

Hugh

45000 miles on a td5 engine? not even run in yet! I have a 300tdi with 166000 miles on and no engine troubles.

Th 2001 model disco got to grips with quality control and in my mind is the best disco out, if I had

Seth, for info both the 200 and 300 series tdi engines have a belt driven camshaft. the TD 5 has a Duplex chain.the older 2.5 turbo deisel had a chain as well.
