I have suggested a forum for pet owners on here, it seems to me at least 50% of caravans and motorhomes travel with their pets , mostly dogs I agree but we have seen all sorts in my short time around. It would be useful to know of dog friendly places, sites with good dog walks on or near, vet and pet-shop locations , pubs that let in dogs, places to go with dogs in tow and where they cannot go. I am totally for responsable dog ownership, our two are a very important part of our family and we treat them and others around with respect, left dog s*!% really annoys me as much as most and I never leave it, unlike some who do, because of these types we need to be positive about our pets and show we care , I feel you rarely see a caravan without a pet, but we are under pressure from others and because of the bad few it stops us going everywhere we would like , so does anyone else feel a caravaning with pets forum is a good idea ?

for our sins we have dogs and children who travel with us, so I know to some we might be beyond the pale, but at least we do not bring our tropical fish away with us , but I bet somewhere someone does !

I reckon a pet forum is a good idea. I wouldn't dream of going away without taking our dogs. It would be like leaving your kids behind. It's one of the few times, when I can spend some quality time with our dogs, without having to rush away.

The caravan is as much a holiday for the pets as it is for the

owners. Yes,it is a shame that a few owners not clearing up the mess after their pet, gives all owners a bad name.

But some decent information on pet friendly places would get my vote.

Hi paul, I hold my hands up in the air because yes on a few occassions I have taken my goldfish on holiday with us. It was the last resort though as no one was available to feed them. They sat on the table in the full awning for a week and seemed to be enjoying themselves however the constant concern that the dog was about to swallow them means that from now on they stay at home with a feeder block :(

Ian

p.s. great idea for pet forum, all for it.

Never seen a fish out and about, did he/she enjoy the change of scenery ? We saw a lovely Birman cat that the owners took everywhere on a lead , it always wanted to play with our two dogs, they were not so keen though, that was at Sandringham cc Also remember a wonderful Myner (?) bird that talked and talked in Cornwall, a caravan with at least six large dogs, with a family of four as well , wondered where they all slept as they only had a porch awning. As I said pets and caravaning is a rich vain that I think deserves its own forum, I feel that and hope others do as well.

Good idea

i think this forum in general could do with some more dedicated areas.

How often has someone new posted a request for help because they couldn't find threads we've all previously read and are now way down the list?

I agree, I feel the forums need a bit of a shake up, a few added , a few joined together maybe. I am not sure about the change in colour for not so recent posts, people tend to stick with the new and not look back, tried the search option a few times and it seemed a bit hit and miss.

We never get the chance to leave Maisie, our Cairn Terrier, at home. As soon as the 'van moves so does she --- and sits by the car. You should see how she sulks when we only take it in for service!

I have just got an email from the Forum Mod's ,who agree that a caravaning with pets forum would be a good idea ,they are passing the idea onwards and upwards, anyone else who agree that the idea is a good one might also like to send a message via the 'suggest a forum' link, advancing the idea along with the reasons , anyone who can think of more, different or better reasons , would love to hear from you, cheers, Mr C.

It would be a nice topic if it was on advice or funny incidents for example. Or dog friendly sites with great dog walks.

Just keep Rottweilers and killings/maulings out of it. That was the cause of the recent problems and closing of the other site recently.

I am afraid it is a strong emotive subject, dogs and children seem quite contentious subjects to some , funny on our travels we have never met any moaning abusive people, but on these forums a very few DO seem to like the sound of their own voices and seem to complain for the sake of it, we have children and pets so we know all is not sweetness and light in the world, and lets be honest horrible things have happened, but as long as the forum is kept as you said about funny happenings, pet friendly advice, positive and healthy debate is one thing and needed, but abuse helps no-one.

I have 3 small dogs and am always pleased to find recommendations from others of good sites. My particular favourites are sites like Clumber where you can walk direct off site into woodland :O) Holy dogdumps, I've got the feeling of summer just typing this.

One useful thing for me is to find sites where I can let our dogs off their leads nearby, we live backing onto forestry commission woods in Bedfordshire and ours love to run free, so on holiday they can get a bit stir crazy. Found Sandringham very good but a dull area for the rest of us , loved walking the river bank at Wroxam early in the Morning as Ferry Meadows, not sure about the Lake district, too wet to get out much !

A good site in the lakes is Low Manesty. Theres a gate direct of the site leading to the lake. Famed for red squirrels although we never saw any. Turn right out of the site if going to Keswick and there are spectacular views. No shower block though.

I'm told they are on site Kev. The warden said it was because it was summer when there was lots of leaf on the trees and the squirrels spend more time higher up rather than grubbing around on the ground. It was June when we went.

A friend said he saw a couple with caged Chipmonks in an awning, but I am not sure if he was pulling my leg, the Goat sounds strange but someone somewhere must have a stranger travelling companion ?

I would love to see a dog/pet forum on this forum, particularly when selecting a site to go to as we prefer one with a dog walk. In fact we now tend to rate sites on the quality of the dogs walks. Also would be nice to find out about areas where dogs can go to and have a run and dog friendly beaches as well. I know not everyone likes dogs so they could at least avoid that part of the forum! LOL.

Nice to see a forum for pet owners. One of the reasons we started caravanning was so we could take our two dogs with us. (No kids at home now - hurray!) A good site for dogs is Low Moor CC up near Whitby. Lovely walks off the site. Be aware that there are sheep running free too tho. Fully agree with Mr C about dog poo - lots of owners don't clean it up or control their dogs (or kids!!) on site. Wary of saying something to them tho' as some people are more aggressive than their dogs!! Makes it bad for those us who do look after our pets. You see lots of 'vanners with pets but whenever you see 'vans for sale they are always 'pet free' - amazing!! As for unusual pets I've seen someone with a large polecat on a lead!!

What we say sometimes if we see people leave thier dogs mess is

"would you like one of our bags for that if you have none with you."

It usually works well and not too rude either hehe
