We intend to take our dogs with us on our caravanning holidays. Occasionaly we would like to visit venues such as Eden Project and don't want to leave the dogs in a hot car. Other than find a local dog kennels that offer day care does any one know of any caravan site offering a dog sitting service?

Sorry but i must say something, no dog should be left in a car whether its in the shade or not what ever the weather conditions as the inside of a car whether its in the shade or not gets very hot and humid even for the shortest time and is highly dangerous for the dogs. If you want to do things with out the dogs they should be put in kennels at home.

Andrew - thanks for your reply. While I agree with you about not leaving dogs in cars I don't agree with your comment about leaving dogs in kennels at home. One of the reasons we have decided to go caravanning is so that our much loved dogs can come with us and experience new walks etc. However there are some times when we would like to do things which dogs cannot - eg go out for a meal, go shopping together (even if its only to the supermarket) or go swimming. Surely we (my OH and myself) should not be denied the chance to do these sorts of things together? Hence my innocent request for information.

I understood your posting so don't worry Annie.

We have three dogs, the oldest now 14, so we must have been doing something right :O)

I think we are sensible enough by now at our ages to know when and when not to leave the dogs in the car.

Like you our dogs go everywhere with us, they are part of our family so, unlike Andrew, we wouldn't dream of putting them in kennels. If we did I think they would pine to death after a week, besides, we would miss them too much and would rather stay at home than not take them with us.

They do say a dog is for life not just for Christmas (or whenever else they need to be discarded because they are a tie).

I'm sure your post had good intentions Andrew but no, kennels aren't for our dogs and if we have to curtail some of the things we would like to do because of the dogs so be it, we don't do it. Our dogs come first.

Sorry to hear that your loved dogs are no longer with you Shiba. I must admit that if I never had them there would be a void in our lives. Even coming home after dropping them off at the grooming parlour the house seems empty, I can't wait for the phone call to let me know they have been shorn and we can fetch them :O)

We did start out with one Mini Schnauzer but after 6 months we thought she would like company so had another but Misty was only with us for 6 short years before contracting an unknown virus which attacked all her organs. I'm not ashamed to say that it hit me hard and I cried for weeks, always in private though. It took me a good 6 months to come to terms with her loss. I couldn't even mention her name and it must have been 4 years before I could bring myself to look at a photo of her or watch her on videos we had taken. Silly I know but that is how I felt.

Two years after her loss we had another, Polly, who is now 6. We also have a Lhasa Apso who is almost 12.

My late father had a Yorkie who he used to dote on, we hadn't become dog owners then. Scamp was getting old and my Dad used to say that when Scamp goes they had better dig a big enough hole for him as well. I remember thinking what a silly ****** he was saying "it's only a dog". Now I can identify with what my father meant.

None of them have a bad bone in their bodies and for a family with young children I would thoroughly recommend the Miniature Schnauzer breed.

we have 2 dogs ourselves they go in the caravan with us every time we go away apart from one week out of the year so we can do things that we could not do with the dogs there. I have had dogs all my life and would NEVER leave them in a car for whatever reason that is why when they are away with us we only do things that involve the dogs going with us. Even when shopping we take them and one of us stays outside with them. I agree that dogs are for life but you only need to ask the RSPCA their opinion on leaving dogs in cars and they will tell you the same as me SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN FOR ANY REASON AT ALL. I was not having a go at you Annie because it is obvious you do care about your dogs well being to enquire it was the reply you got from LB that annoyed me. I am sure if you realy wanted to take your dog there should be a kennel nearby where your going and may take a dog in for a day. I would do a google on the area you are going to and if there is a kennel making a booking in advance as they tend to be realy busy.

We are going to Cornwall for two weeks caravanning. We are really looking forward to taking our miniature Schnauzer (not so miniature sadly). We accept that we can't visit some attractions, but Im sure there will be times in the future we can do that. In the meantime, my brother has just had to have his dog put down, and Im going to enjoy every minute of mine....

But I do understand what Annie is saying.
