I passed my driving test in a Bedford RL whilst in the army, the examiner being a civilian from the local test centre. When HGV licences were introduced a couple of years later I was serving in the middle east, often driving a Bedford recovery truck. On my return I applied for my HGV under “Grandfather rights” but was turned down because I had not been regularly driving HGV’s in the UK for 6 months out of the last year. However, my licence was still valid for cars. I had to take an HGV test in exactly the same type of Bedford as I originally passed my test in to gain my entitlement to drive trucks.
