Dunnet to Inverness

Could anyone please advise, using AA Route Planner I tried to take my caravan to Inverness from Dunnet but my planner tells me it is not possible,ok just car but not with caravan, has anyone done this trip and what route did you use. Thankyou Denis.

ps, I am getting off ferry at scrabster.

Hi Denis,

It's perfectly OK to take your caravan to Dunnet, just follow the A9, the road is undulating and narrow in places, but should cause no problems what so ever!!

Hi Denis,

If you are coming direct to Inverness from Scrabster you don't go near Dunnet but if you are going to the CC site at Dunnet Bay you turn off to tne left in Thurso (signpost Castletown A836). When coming to Inverness then return to Thurso then A9 to Inverness

I live in the North of Scotland, you can take a caravan from Dunnet to Inverness. All you need to do is to go to Castletown and head towards Wick and take all the signs for the A9 south. All the roads are two lanes, and very good.

Hi Denis

I'm on that road all the time, not a problem. A few good sites along the route as well. From Scrabster ur a mile from Thurso then its south on the A9 all the way past Helmsdale and Brora. Some great views, cant understand AA auto route.

The only part to be aware of Denis is the very steep hill with a tight bend at Berriedale.

Done it several times with and without the van, very straight forward take A836 to Thurso then A9 to Inverness, cant believe AA couldnt tell that. Very good road,

Hi Dennis,

A9 down to Inverness - an excellent (trunk) road with no problems.

Nowadays I take anything from the AA Route planner with a jaundiced eye since it once gave me a route totalling over 500 miles for a journey of about 30 miles and has several times insisted I go miles out of my way to get onto the A80 which is quite close to my home.

Incidentally, I have been the A90 route with caravan but in the opposite direction, going through Inverness to catch the Orkney ferry at Scrabster.

I did Inverness to Dunnet Bay CC site and back again some years ago.I used the east coast route all the way with no diversions inland.By memory this led through Wick then Thurso,or was it the other way round.The problem with some direct routes up there are that they are single track,unlike the coastal main road.

I was towing a 1350kg Bailey with a 1.9tdi Audi Avant and had no problems,although there were one or two fine hills!

Just go straight down the A9 - good road nowadays. Very easy journey.
