eco groundsheets

just bought a new awning so needed a new groundsheet we heard some sites only allow the eco ones so we bought one but when we used it we found if you sat on it water seeped up through the air holes are you supposed to put something else on the top or just get everything wet and muddy

There's no such thing as an environmentally-friendly groundsheet! Breathable groundsheets are SLIGHTLY better for the grass but let water through! If you want to stop water penetration, you'll just kill the grass. Try a hard-standing with or without groundsheet, the awning can be pegged down and any moisture should be below the level of the stones.
