Hi All

The material on one of my front blinds has begun to come away from the metal strip at the bottom of the blind. It has started fraying and seems to be tearing the more we use it. Is there any easy way to repair this or do I need a new blind? If I do need a new blind where could I get one or are there any breakers where I could obtain a good used one?

Hi Magnus - I've recently dismantled and cleaned all the blinds in my Abbey, it is not that difficult for a competent DIYer to strip them completely and reassemble, including re-tensioning the rewind springs. Hand sewing or a domestic sewing machine could be used to remake the bottom of the blind that slides into the metal bar. Their is usually sufficient extra material available on the roller.

There are a few different designs to blinds but most work in more or less the same way. Over the weekend I had a go at our front blinds and found out one or two things.

As said there is normally enough material to remake the bottom joint, however once dismantled the damage can be glued back together with super-glue and turned upside down so the bottom is now attached to the top roller.

Again once dismantled, any frayed edges can be trimmed slightly with a craft knife and still leave plenty enough to slide in the guides.

Pre-Tension I found should be 20 turns which is best counted as 40 half turns, but before this get a can of silicone maintenance spray and squirt liberally down the roller tube.

My front blinds had all been removed before, if you do this make sure you mark the legs in pairs as they vary slightly in length. If both sides don't match then one side will hold the blind tight and the other will be slack causing unsightly diagonal creases.

One other tip, I finally used a bit of 'blue-tack' in the screwdriver slot while tensioning the blind?, this way I managed to count to 40 without the screwdriver slipping out the slot at 25-33-37 whatever!!!

I think Gary has covered the subject very well - an explanation as to how to retension the top roller is difficult to put into words. The Seitz blinds that I dismantled have a small plastic moulding which sits on the end of the spring loaded spindle, it is then possible to wind this up (as Garry says 20 or so turns depending on the size of the blind) and then re-engage it in it's holder before it suddenly unwinds! Once you tackle the job all will become clear - have a go!
