Hi All. Can anyone offer me any advice about buying a small electric oven for the caravan as there is'nt an oven fitted to my van. Is there a small (sit on the worktop) type with a light wattage that wont cause the local power station to insert another Isotope rod whenever I roast a meatloaf.

Hello Barkas,

I believe that quite a number of caravan manufacturers have established that the conventional Gas Ovens I nmany caravans are barely used, so to save weight they have been designing the van without one.

However that does not answer your question, Your suggestion is perfectly valid, but you might like to consider a few other solutions that other caravanners have found.

You can get combination microwaves. This gives you the advantage of another form of cooking as well as the oven. Maybe you already have one at home that you could use?

Alternatively many caravanners have sung the praises of the 'Ramoska' heated pan system (sold by Lakeland) claiming to be able to do roasts etc. advantage here is you can also easily use it home as well.

Hope this helps

An electric oven will probably trip the supply to the pitch and if on a ring circuit may trip other supplies. Microwave is a better option. We have a gas oven in our 2004 caravan and it gets used most times that we go away and we would not be without it.

Hello Ian,

It all depends on the element rating. Small ovens may have as little as an 800W to 1kW element though yo must of course check the data plate or specification to confirmation.

Many microwaves though the rated output may be 650W may actually consume nearer 1.2kW

It is not always clear which is the most efficient, The oven may take longer but less energy may be wasted because it is thermostatically controlled, a Microwave my be running at full power for longer.

Not all people like the way microwaves cook things, sometimes only a conventional oven will really do.

The issue is that in most cases, there will be other electrics running such as fridge, hot water boiler, kettle, lights, Tv etc and the combination is what trips the supply.

The electric oven just makes it happen quicker. Microwaves "spike" when first switched on and then settle down to a lower wattage.

Agreed,

But the same consideration must be given for any major power user in the caravan. a 1kW element consumes about 4.4A, Electric heaters often use much more, so the principle of monitoring power usage is known to most caravanner's.
