Energy Tariffs

British Gas have a couple of long term fixed price tariffs at below OFGEMs capped rates. 16 months and 24 months. Our energy tariff expires September 2025 but I have now switched on to the two year fixed rate which over a year is estimated to cost me all of £2 extra. I guess other providers are doing likewise. Worth a punt.

I don’t know if we would stick with them that long. They installed Smart meters 11 months ago and Gas is still not sending readings., so estimated every month. Meter will not even send reading to the monitor ,even if placed next to it. Both neighbours work fine one with EON and other with OVO. They insist it is not a meter faulty. They may soon be loosing a customer,

I'm a serial switcher for just about any service.

The biggest irritation I have about energy supplies is that there are better deals if you have a smart meter. Regrettably I can't get one.

About three years ago I was totally frustrated with them wrt their website being terrible and making it neigh on impossible to manage the account. They even managed to put my BIL account into mine, and he lived in Coventry prior to moving to a care home in Wiltshire. All I wanted to do was close his account.

Anyway since that fiasco and improvements to their app and website I’m a happy bunny and can manage our account properly.

At present we are on a fixed rate with Octopus and that also finishes in Sept might have a look at the 24 months with British gas might worth considering

My daughter's meters via EON had similar problems. Electric yes, gas no. Just needed the gas meter to be paired with the electric meter. A 15 min job that took months to get done.

Her neighbour had his neighbours gas meter paired with his electric meter. That also took months to sort out.

Don't know about other providers but with BG you do not incur any exit fees if you change contract tariff with them. So by opting for the new contract over two years I am fixed at something very close to the cancelled contract. Should energy prices reduce there is no restriction on me opting for a lower priced BG tariff.

I'm also opting for a new Virgin Media 18 month contract as my current one ends mid September 2025, but when I contacted VM I got a new 18 month one for only £3pm more, so it is costing me an extra £15 between now and mid September to recontract early. But compared to other providers it was cheaper and a more comprehensive package. Plus, it removes the hassle of trying to recontract or change provider in September when we are away in Germany. Don't need the hassle.

British Gas have been 3 times now to pair it again and still no joy. The monitor has shown a Red triangle fault from day one and Engineers keep taking pictures of it.

At Christmas we signed up for two years with BG for gas and electric. Very cheap compared to the rest.

The energy market is imo very volatile because of the Governments net zero policy, world changes eg Trump and of course Ukraine and Israel.
As we all know prices in the energy field are a real moving feast.You just have to bite the bullet and make up your mind on the day😉

By opting for fixed rate periods it allows the energy provider to buy in advance based in futures,?knowing they have customers.

If cheaper Octopus rates come along between time can you transfer to a new lower rate without penalty?

The gas no penalty, electric £25, we charge up the PHEV car and batteries at night for 8.5 pence @ kWh day rate is standard price, on the plus side export tariff 15 pence @kWh for the next 12 months.

I'm with 🐙 just switched gas to Tracker a new price every day it's 0.7p a unit cheaper than my previous fix and 1p cheaper than fixing now. Yes I'm taking a chance but gas prices are normally lower over the summer. I will look at fixing again in October when Tracker prices rise for the winter.
Electricity is on Agile now that can be a roller coaster, however for this month they owe me 5.6p but I owe them the standing charge😟

We switch back from Octopus Tracker for gas 8th February when gas reached 6.657 p kWh, now paying 5.804 pence kWh, come end of April this month our gas usage should significant drop, fortunately a small potion of electric export subsidises our gas usage.

I switched gas to fixed last October as tracker started to climb. I switched back a week ago it's been 5.3p or below since then.
Will monitor it and probably do the same next winter.
