Hi everyone. Come on then, how is it done? Everytime I put up our porch awning it looks all crumpled and not straight at all. Yet, when I look around, especially at the full awnings, they look perfect, taut and straight lines - what's the secret?????

And even that doesn't always work, we went to france in june for 3 weeks, put the awning up at 3 different sites and marveled at how perfect it was, thinking we'd got it cracked, went this last weekend to a relatively local site and because we were expecting company, took the big awning, and we just couldn't get it right.

l second that Rab, wouldnt do for her in doors that the only awning on site would look amiss.

If you can, avoid slopes, particularly from the back to the front of the awning.
Ensure that the roof poles and those across the front are tensioned as much as you can ( there are devices on the market to help you achieve this effect ).

Have a wife like mine who stands behind me with a spirit level to check all the horizontal poles are level.
We then have discussions as to whether the bubble is in the centre!!
Needless to say who is always right!!

Its fascinating watching others do this. A German chap arrived at a pitch close to us recently, and levelling the van alone on a very slight slope took him several goes withe steadies, blocks of wood and no less than 2 hours! The sun porch pegging and setting everything else out took him the rest of the day...and I thought I was particular.
You have to remember that anyone erecting their awning on any pitch on any site is the entertainment for everyone around. We have entertained the neighbouring 'vans putting ours up in a gale, and likewise taking it down in a gale. All very exciting for those watching I'm sure. At the same time we have watched people doing the same thing and learnt some valuable tips.
Just laugh it off, put it down to experience, and try not to make the same mistakes again!

My other half calls an awning "an argument in a bag" It only turns into an argument if he doesn't do as he's asked and hold the bits he needs to!
I've always started at one end and worked my way round and there have been times when the awning looks like its just been thrown at the caravan - some friends helped us put ours up last year as they were set up first and he started in the middle, pegged it all down before it was tensioned and it looked perfect - have down it that way ever since and, touch wood, it seems to work - no more arguments either

For matrimonial harmony the easiest solution to erecting an awning is to borrow a wife from a neighbouring pitch.
After the arguing and falling out you can hand her back and all is bliss for the rest of your stay.

they are correct an awning is an argument in a bag i must use that in future.
anyway we are not as bad now tho. we have a 1088 isabella full awning and its a doddle to put up mind you we are away this weekend and have bought an isabella magnum with an annex and it will be the first time up so maybe this could be the arguement in a bag lol.

The wine is definitely the way forward. What I mean by that is get the wife drunk and she won't notice the fact that the awning material is hanging like the sails of a becalmed 3 masted sailing ship and that things keep sliding off the table. Practise is the answer and knowing your own awning.
