EV charging musings

I drive an Audi A6 plug in hybrid, we've been down to the Brighton CAMHC site for five nights (daughter is at University there). I know that with a full tank of petrol I can just make it there while towing, but any diversions etc would see me possibly having to top up so I like to also have a full battery to give me a bit of a safety factor to negate having to fill up en-route. While in Brighton I used one of the EV chargers in the car park (I like to park in the larger space!) and with the current price of fuel the difference between public charging and petrol isn't the huge difference that it was, but I was amazed at the number of EV's parked in charging bays that weren't actually on charge! Selfish beyond belief. Also the amount of chargers out of action was also an eye opener. The Asda at the marina had four chargers, none were working.

For the return journey home I also wanted to charge the car up so opted to use the caravan. CAMHC charge £7 for a day's charging and you have to charge through the caravan using your 3-pin slow charger. Connecting up with everything else in the caravan off (apart from the usual fridge, charger etc) the MCB in the caravan tripped quickly. Switching the charger to half-power kept everything fine but you couldn't use anything else with a large current draw (hot water etc). The car charged fully giving 45 miles (solo) overnight easily. At £7 a charge it isn't far off a gallon of petrol at the minute.

What point am I trying to make? None at all, as I have said before, I'm just giving you the experience of someone using a hybrid while towing. It would be nice to see more charging points on club sites as I do like to run the car on electric while out and about locally. While charging through the caravan is achievable, trying to remember not to switch on other appliances takes some concentration.

There are means of automatically penalising drivers who overstay when not charging. If the car is idle and not charging is one method, or ANPR linked to the chargers is another. Neither require human attendants to enforce. Set the “idle” time at a high fee per minute.

Non functioning chargers brings the electric vehicle scene in to disrepute. Companies need to up their game as it’s also losing them money too.
