EVs and VED

EVs have been exempt from VED until now. From 1st April VED will apply and this is on cars registered since 2017 . In other words MINE!
However, you can tax your car anytime you want and so we have just renewed the tax at £0. The tax of £195 would have been due in Ocober 2025, now it is March 2026. Hence we have now got an extra 6 months of VED free motoring.
A small win, but every little helps.
Thought other EV owners may be interested but need to do it ASAP.

So did you have to cancel your existing VED even though it was £0, then relicense it again at £0?

No. Just go onto DVLA with your V5C and go through the online car taxing system. The system asks if you are sure, but then just reverts the renewal date to March 2026.

It's worth noting that this applies for _all_ cars that are currently £0 VED. i.e. if you have a car with less than 100g Co2 per km registered before April 2017, it will have a new tax rate from next tuesday. You can renew this week and avoid the new rate for an extra year. The saving is not as high for non EV, but can still save £20.
