Just a thought, if you decide to risk Holgates this weekend. Most route planners will bring you off the M6 at Junc36 (I pressume you are coming south as you mentioned the A66) DONT

It is much better to come down to 35 and then follow the directions off Holgates own Web site.

was looking at coming off at junc 35--a590-b6385 etc

so this route is not recommended then???
 
As long as you come off at Junc 35 and follow the directions off the web site you will be ok. This way limits the tricky bits to about 1/2 mile of narrow (passing place)type road.
