Hi all, Does anyone out there know if i can upgrade my sat nav thats fitted to my Honda CRV. A friend told me it was just a matter of buying a new updated disc but i have a feeling its not as simple as that. I am driving a Honda CRV EX on a 2008 plate.

The drive on factory sat navs allow the nav software to be updated, just as your desktop computer used to be. It also allows an updated map disk to be used, from your dealer or search online. There is probably a car forum for your car out there for in depth responses if the answers you need aren't supplied here..

Hi There ,
Yes you can get updated discs/ data from a main dealer ( did mine last year )

it can be as costly as buying a new tom tom etc - but it is obviously neater

It largely depends whether or not your existing satnav is any good. My Passat has a built-in (RNS315) and bluntly it is pretty useless. It has very limited flexibility, it tells you very little, its POI operation is a waste of time, place names have to be input complete with accents etc, it only does UK postcodes - I could go on for ages.

The car is only 15 months old but it has a lot of road errors (conversely it has lots of roads on it that I would not have expected such as retail park carparks) and an update is not available. The process is an SD card into the slot in the radio and it costs £80 as a download (heaven knows what a dealer would charge.)

For that price you could get one of the better TomToms with lifetime maps. I know which way I would go.

:)

My Mercedes built in one seemed fine at first, but then realised it does not read Post Codes fully, only takes first 4 letters. Then was telling me I was off road when a new road was not recognised.
Bought new disc. Must be mad. Cost £126 !!
Thereafter ignored it and used Garmin.
Like the one built into my motorhome. Chinese made junk. The manufacturer replaced it after many mailings, but still sent me wrong ways on European roads.

My 2010 tow car uses an SD card and to buy the latest update would cost me £129. I can get a decent Tomtom for that price, which incidentally I prefer to use.

My two year old Tom Tom is pretty good. In fact I'm looking to buy an upgrade that works in "caravan mode". His Royal Woosieness has it.
The Samsung Android phone is also very good indeed.

My 2064 Santa Fe is Great, if your doing about 50 mph on a motorway it will take you off at the next junction, around and back on to the motorway. I have learned to ignore it. BUT took me direct to Switzerland.
Going from Milton Keynes to Ludlow took me the same route as my Snooper on Caravan mode, so not too bad at times. , If I am towing I use my Snooper.

I'm not sure whet to do next about satnavs.
The built-in ones in two Mercedes suffered from the high update charges and limited facilities (only accept 5 charactr post codes)

the present caravan friendly Snooper has proved extremely unreliable in europe despite constant map updates and is difficult to program for a 'forced' route.

Borrowed a garmin for a while in UK and found it much better, but it was not a caravan alternative route versions.

Seems a good time to buy right now - anyone got a recommendation ?

PS I've also trid apps on phone e.g navi, but screen is too small and fiddly for serius use. A better one seems to be Maps.me but needs more memory space than i have available.

RayS , I paid £50 last year to up grade my Snooper 2000n for life time map upgrades, ( not speed cameras.) Its been great for UK and Europe, took me a better route back from to Switzerland , 6 weeks ago, than the in car one one. ON MY 2064 Sante Fe, but dealers are saying latest SF upgrades will be better. . I have set my Snooper to being 3 metre wide and 8 metre long ,for the van, and it still wants to take me down little lanes, but great for Cc, C & CC , acsi and camping car sites Europe wide, with piccys..

I've used my CC version of Snooper for my last two European jaunts and it's been spot on for every journey, only using outfit friendly routes when requested. Maybe I've just been lucky in The Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany , Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

I think, Snooper, mine is great for normal roads, just need to be carefull when you get down to out of the way places thats why i tell it we are 3 metres wide and 8 metres long. But has all the sites. On it.
