FAO Lutz German towing rules

I have a Hymer caravan weighing 1700kg loaded and while on holiday I saw Germans with the same caravan and weight using either a Citroen C5 or a C8. Is there no recommended 85% rule in Germany as neither of these cars appear to be heavy enough. We may have to change our car soon and don't really want another 4x4.

No, no-one outside the UK has ever heard of an 85% weight ratio recommendation. Apart from other technical conditions that must be fulfilled, there is, however, a legal requirement not to exceed 100% if you wish to tow at 100km/h instead of the regular 80km/h speed limit for caravans.
