Faulty electrics

I have a problem with the indicators and lights not working on the caravan when attached to car. The van is going in for a service Monday so they can look at it, but could the problem be with the car. Not picking the van back until Friday and then going away on the Saturday, so a bit concerned if the issue is not with the caravan side of the connection. Would an motor electrician be able to confirm the car electrics are OK or would he also need the caravn?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Michael,

Would it be possible to plug your van onto someone elses tow car or your car onto someone else van or lighting board, at least then you would know where the fault lies. Failing that I'm sure if you explain to the dealers on arrival for your service they would be able to test the lights there and then to assist you.

You dont say what sort of coupling plug you have ?

If you have only got the 12n fitted it wont work !

If you have the 12s fitted ?

Here is a wiring diagram 12s wiring diagram

If you have the modern 13pin fitted ?

I had a problem recently with my indicators not working when attached to the caravan. We left Glasgow for Fort William and everything was working fine, I remember indicating at Crainlarich and they were working but by the time we reached Glencoe had stopped working. I parked in a car park and started to investigate, with the caravan unplugged the indicators on the car worked fine. My 11 yr old then told me that he had plugged his laptop into charge in the invertor I have plugged into the 12v sockets at the back of the car and it wasn't working either. What had happened was the towbar electrics indictor relay for the caravan took a feed from the 12v sockets supply in the boot of the car (Ford Galaxy) and plugging in the laptop had blown the fuse, changed the fuse and no problems since......apart from all the other issues that come with owning a Ford Galaxy!

Check the pins on your plug - maybe dirty or oxidised.

The plug pins are split maybe they need opening out slightly with a small screwdriver to make better contact inside the socket tube.

I've also used WD40 in the past and then and plugged/unplugged a few times.
