Hello Craig,

In your 2001 caravan the manufacture will have fitted a Power Supply. The Construction regulations require this device and it is quite complex device, hence the relatively high price you have been quoted. They produce a highly regulated DC current that is suitable for running a number of 12DC items as well as charging the battery.

Technically you are incorrect to use the word 'Transformer' as these only convert AC currents between two voltages and by themselves do not produce DC power. However older style battery chargers usually use a transformer in conjunction with a rectifier to produce a coarse 12DC output, but with poor regulation, so they are not suitable for running electronic appliances, unless a battery is also connected which tends to smooth and partially regulate the voltage.

I do not know the make or model of the unit fitted to your caravan, so I can't offer any specific help on where to source one, however you may find a suitable device from companies like Towsure or Maplin Electronics both of whom have web sites.
