Festival Camp Sites

Hi All

Does anyone ever take their pride and joy to festivals and stay on the festival campsite? We regularly go to Shrewsbury Folk Festival at the end of August but stay on a CL about 15mins walk from the Festival Site. In a few weeks, however, we are are going to Warwick Folk Festival and have booked to stay on the festival campsite. Is there anything in particul we should be aware of? The caravans have a separate section/field on the site from the tent campers and they are usually pretty careful about distances between units, more so even than on club sites where they line caravans up in straight lines to squash as many pitches in as possible. Any views from experienced festival caravaners would be much appreciated.

Yes Denise enjoy yourself, I have taken to doing W/E shows now, one main reason that caravan parks are to damn expensive, and having a shower in the van helps.

All the best Andrew.

Hi Denise. We purchased our van (pride and joy) only a couple of months ago for the purpose of going to music festivals, of which we are doing about eight this year. So far we have been to Wychwood, Big Session, Glastonbury and tomorrow we are off to Cornbury. Then we have Trowbridge, Stokes Bay, Beautiful Days and Towersey. How many of these are we staying on the festival site? None!.

The main reason for this is that we would rather have a hookup and all the other extras that you tend get on a site. Having seen the long line of people waiting to fill their 40 litre water containers last weekend, I know where I would rather be.

A lot will depend on how quiet you like it when you are back at the van and also what the conditions of the field are like. I have a dread of having the van pulled out of a muddy field by a tractor. Last year at Trowbridge sticks in my mind!

We went to Shrewsbury last year and camped on site, which was fine but we were lucky with the weather. I have to admit that is one place I might be tempted to take the van but unfortunately it clashes with Towersey this year.

With regard to the cost issue, it really does depend on the festival. That's if they allow vans at all.

Sorry I can't be of much help with your questions being a newbie and not having stayed on festival sites but just had to reply. Enjoy the festival at Warwick, the line up looks good and we were tempted but it clashes with Trowbridge. You never know we may meet up in the future.

Hi Denise, We used to stay at a cl when we went to the Upton Jazz Festival and use bikes to get to the various gigs.

For the last few years we have stayed on the festival site and it's been great. You are much more in the atmosphere and you have the convenience of having the van close by if you want a meal or even a rest.

I was nervous this year with a new van because of everything in the van being so reliant on electricity. We managed without any problems from Thursday to Monday and I am sure the battery would have gone on much longer.

Hi Denise

We stay on the festival site at the Glen Miller music festival from the Friday to the Tuesday over the August Bank Holiday weekend. There the caravans are a bit closer together than would be expected on a cl or regular site but we find that we are only in the caravan for breakfast, the morning ablutions and at night to sleep so we don't use much battery power.

The closeness of the caravans and sometimes tents or motorhomes makes for friendly relations with the 'neighbours' and we've often shared drinks, barbeques etc together. We often see past 'neighbours' at the next festival and we say hello and stop for a chat, it's really nice.

As well as the Glen Miller festival we're going to Upton Blues festival in a couple of weeks time as a break en route back from our holiday in Devon.

Like Clive we'll be staying on a festival campsite in Upton but near to the rugby field and memorial hall in our case.
