First time caravanning in France with two young children

Hi,

We want to go caravanning in France end of June,want somewhere warm but don't want to travel too far as it's our first time. We want a site close to a nice beach with plenty of entertainment for our kids aged 1 and 3.

Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions? all will be gratefully recieved.

Any idea what port you would be sailing into? If Cherbourg you could try Le Grand Large at Le Pieux - 15 mins from Cherbourg and right on the beach. An ideal site for young children and the site is level. You could try booking through Caravan Club who have some good combined ferry / site deals or Camping Cheques who again have good ferry offers. You may find that the last two weeks in June are low season on this site and they accept camping cheques (vouchers) which cover the pitch, electric hook up and two adults. They may charge an additional sum for children but check the cost on the site's website.
 
Hi thanks for your replies. I think we have decided to be on the safe side as first time abroad and opt for Brittany.Which would be the best port to go to? would like a site with kids entertainment and near to a beach.Any suggestions,greatly welcomed.
 
Depending on your finances the Portsmouth/St Malo crossing would be your best bet, this puts you with a couple of hours of the northern Brittany beaches, but it is also a 8 - 9 hour crossing (thinking of the kids). Our choice of crossing is the Poole/Cherbourg crossing with Brittany Ferries, approx 4.75 hour crossing. Depending on which ferry you chose on this route you would possibly need an overnight stop somewhere, excellent municipal site at Carentan - 30 miles from ferry port. 2 sites to "look at" are Camping Haliotis at Pontorson on the Normandy/Brittany boundary, excellent site, well run etc with children's play areas, animal park etc and first class swimming pool area and, secondly, a bit down into Brittany at Carnac and Camping Le Moustoir. Another good site excellent beaches a mile away and plenty to do on siye for kids. There are other sites nearer the beach in Carnac but I have no experience of them. Both sites take camping cheques out of season. Good luck.

Camping de La Baie at La Trinite Sur Mer is fantastic. Lovely small site with great childrens pool. Beaches right on your doorstep, no need to take the car anywhere except the supermarket. We went last Aug with our three children 6 and twins age 3 and we are going again this Aug. Only a 2 1/2 hr drive from Roscoff and the weather was beautiful in Southern Brittany. Denise

WE have used the plymouth/roscoff route on a number of occasions (although living in the midlands). Access to'from the port area at Roscoff is easy and you are quickly on the french roads wihtout passing through built up areas. With a few exceptions the french traffic is very light although the speed limits through some towns and villages quite slow sometimes with 'lumps and humps' when passing schools etc.

I might be inclined to select your route and viable cost (through the clubs you get a good price with preferential exchange rates that were set before the worst of the crunch) and then see what would be in striking distance.

The Alan Rogers France always gives a detailed and accurate half page desciption!
