Fitting two regulators

My caravan has the older cylinder-mounted regulator set-up. If I were to connect two regulators via a y-splitter and I only connected one gas cylinder would gas leak out of the un-connected regulator ?

I have no idea if there is a one-way valve in them and would rather ask those more in-the-know than me than connect it up to find out.

Hello rubix,

Unless they are specifically designed for a 'y' connection you must assume they are not safe in that configuration.

Truma/Carver used to produce what was called a Duo-Matic. This consisted of two regulators connected by a 'y' piece. Each regulator had an automatic shut off that allowed you to change either bottle without the remaining bottle leaking back through the loose regulator.

Without the shut off system, the loose regulator will leak.

Hi Rubix

On my last van I had a similar setup but instead of a "Y" fitment I fitted a 3 way tap available from accessory shops. This allows you to select either regulator or switch off both. With 2 cylinders connected, when one runs out it's a simple job to switch to the other cylinder, even in the dark when it's raining. As you know, cylinders always run out under these conditions!

Rubix,

Would gas leak out of the disconnected regulator - YES if you use a Y piece

If you use a special tap - then it should be safe if you take care, but these are by no means foolproof.

If you go for such a tap selection system - then I'd look at the Gaslow (or equivalent) systems - and always leave two bottles connected - even if one is empty, this will work as a "stop" for the gas...

If you fit a purpose made 3 way gas tap there is no need to keep 2 bottles connected. The tap is fitted after the regulators and is as safe and reliable as your cooker taps. You also have the added advantage that it is not fitted in the habitable part of the van but in a special locker with gas drop vents. Having said that, I always had 2 bottles connected but that was purely for convenience.

The tap I fitted was a lot cheaper than a Gaslow one, can't remember the make unfortunately but got it from a caravan accessory shop. One advantage of a tap over a "Y" connector is that when a bottle runs out you switch to the full bottle and can disconnect the empty bottle for refilling whilst still maintaining a gas supply to your caravan.
