'Flashing in' after being overtaken

My present D5 will always show a far more optimistic return than is the actual case, I refill my car every week tank to tank, and it`s the same every week, if the trip computer is recording say 53mpg in real terms it is more like 50mpg or less, I wish it would give me a nice surprise, and record less, but that has never been the case for me.

The problem with trip computers is that the mileage tends to be inaccurate. Speedometers (and therefore odometers) are allowed to show a speed of up to 10% higher than actual speed. It follows that indicated MPG will therefore show a higher MPG than the actual MPG.

No, it does not follow that way at all, if you read any decent car mag, you will see that the speedometer and the mile ometer, are not governed by the exact same shortcomings. you can have a speed ometer over reading by 10% and a mileometer over reading by 2%... you can have a speedometer over reading by a mere 2% and the mileometer over reading by 5%.

That’s as maybe but in your examples the odometer is still giving a figure higher than the actual distance travelled. Hence you would get an over optimistic MPG figure on your trip computer

A few years ago I worked as a breakdown recovery mechanic, the number of times I heard people who had run out of fuel say "But my computer says I have another x miles before I run out" Yet the fuel guage was clearly saying empty. and there car had come to a halt.

It doesn't bother me if I don't get flashed in. I always used my own judgement of when to pull in safely.. even if flashed i don't pull in until its safe to do so to thank the persons who do flash I use indicators or warning lights a couple of flicks.
