For Nigel Donnelly

Sitting in the doctors today and browsed thro a computer magazine read article about making your PC quieter with different fans heatsinks etc and the writer was 'Nigel Donnelly' was that the same as our Editor It was a couple of years old as most of the mags are sad git arnt I

Deli Dave,

In my life previous to being a caravan journalist, I wrote about PCs for Computeractive and PCW magazines, old cars for Practical Classics and nutraceuticals for the Nutraceutical Buyer's Guide. I was worried people would think I was a bit of a saddo though, so I decided to embark on a career in caravan writing instead.

Please don't tell anyone about the computer stuff. I find it a bit embarassing...

So that's where I know your name from, I've had ComputerActive since issue 1.

I'm going off it lately though because it's getting too nerdy/geeky.

Theres far too much gadget and gizmo stuff and not enough on computing :O(

LB,

It's tough for Computeractive in many ways. It's designed for people who want to know more about how their computer works, but they get criticised for repeating the same 'how-to' features and workshops (I must have seen the putting vinyl records on CD feature a dozen times). Problem is when they start doing other stuff, it's not serving the people who made it a success in the first place.

Not dissimilar to Practical Caravan in many ways. Half of the readers complain that we are too hand-holding and think everyone is an idiot, while the other half say that we are too technical and novice caravan buyers can't get a foothold.

Despite that, it's still the best job I've ever had...

I appreciate that and have spoken in your defence in the past, infact some of the criticisms are embarrassing. I started reading PC before we bought a caravan along with The Caravan Handbook and learned a lot before collecting it.

I also appreciate that 99 pages in ComputerActive takes some filling but there are lots of tasks in computing that could be broken down and dealt with. Take Digital photography for example, they could show people how to clone or maybe change the levels/curves. Theres masks, gradients, layers etc. that could be covered plus a multitude of other tasks and tools. Then theres DTP and it's many tools to learn. I do like the C/A forum though :O)
