Where we lived in Pinetown in Kazulu-Natal, the yard was full of old steam locomotives. They were in good running condition till being parked up there.

I believe the plentiful supply of cheap coal kept South Africa using steam locomotives long after most countries had switched to diesel or electric.

I am fairly sure they still have a number of coal fire electricity coal fired generators. Probably the majority of the population still have coal fires?
