IF ITS A TOWCAR YOURE AFTER AND HAVE A SINGLE AXLE IN THE HIGHER WEIGHT BRACKET UP TO 1500 YOU CANT BUY A BETTER TOWCAR THAN A MONDEO. I HAVE A 2.5 2003 MONDEO AND A STERLING JEWEL 2002 AND ITS GREAT EXCEPT FOR THE FUEL CONSUMPTION (28 MILES TO THE GALLON) WHEN TOWING SO IF THATS TOO MUCH FOR YOU BUY A TDCI 130BHP IT DOES 40+ AND TOWS SUPERBLY

I have a 130BHP TDCI Mondeo Estate 6 forward gears ,plus a 2.7 Nissan Terrano 7 seater estate ,and i get no where near 40+ MPG with the Mondeo ,its more like 29 MPG towing a Senator Indiana ,i have had over 60 MPG along the M4 early in the morning driving solo and not doing more than 65 MPH

If you all read my comment i say that the Mondeo 130 does 40+ to the gallon no mention of what it does towing, i have no idea what it does towing but no one can dipute its towing capabilities. I do know what my 2.5 does as unless someone wants to argue about that as well. Please get a grip

Joby's figures sound about right for the Mondeo, 29mpg from a 2.5 petrol mondeo towing may be a little optimistic but towing is a great leveller between large/small and petrol / diesels

ie my bmw 3.0 petrol did 28mpg solo and 22 towing, but our Sharan 1.9 tdi did 47 solo and 28 towing, a much bigger difference. Even quite small engines do not work that hard solo so small engines do much better mpg but are less efficient when worked hard

hi all

it's not just about fuel consumption

what about the soft rear suspension that can not easily up rated for towing mine is/was a 1997 1.6 zetec verona with 75kg on the ball the rear sank down about 100ml and while towing and was like being on a roll a coaster(very uncomfortable) I tried every where to get uprated springs and shocks but the only ones available were the boy racer shortend type not ideal for towing.

everyone told me(befrore purchase) how reliable they where but I think someone was joking, mine was unreliable from day one but wanting to use it to tow with occasionallly tried to get it sorted, what a mistake that was. in two years of trying must I have spent twice its purchase price.

in the two years it had:-

1. a full set of brakes (everything exept pipes)to stop it juddering and pulling to one side.

2. a cambelt.

3. a clutch.

4. a front wheelbearing.

5. a drive shaft.

6. a battery and alternator and set of h/t leads (poor starting).

7. a full exaust (managed to salvage the cat).

8. a windscreen (probably my fault as it was a small crack to start with but got bigger).

9. a full set of tyres the 15in alloy low profile type (not cheap to replace).

10. both btm suspension arms (last test).

+ the remote never worked even with new batterys needs recoding apparently

I had a mk2 mondeo and to be honest you are absolutley correct the rear suspension was crap i could not drive over speed bumps without levelling out or worse still knocking the exhaust to bits so i got shot of it but find the mk 3 ahell of a lot better

if i were you i1d take it to have a mechanic have a look it
I bought the Mondeo Estate new in July 2004 ,its serviced every 12000 miles,at the moment it has 36000 miles on the clock ,so i hardly think it needs looking at ,i do average about 46 MPG solo and about 29 MPG towing ,allthough once i was down to 24 MPG in strong winds

My last Ford was a 1986 XR2 and I swore not to buy another as First On the Rubbish Dump and Fix Or Repair Daily were appropriate after it rusted and fell apart after 7 years. We have now bought an S-max which ticks all the boxes for our requirements but the badge on the bonnet still makes me nervous, I'd be much happier if the S-max were made by Toyota or Honda,

Although its based on the new Mondeo floorpan, the tail barely moves when the caravan drops onto it.

Why did you not buy a Toyota or Honda then? Ford cant be all that bad if you bought one!

Neither Toyota nor Honda make a direct equivalent to the S-max, the verso and frv are too small and the previa has a gutless diesel, if Toyota put their 170 hp diesel in the previa it may have been worth a second look

I used to own the mark 2, 2.5 V6 Mondeo ,it was a fantastic car ,never had a thing wrong in 5 years of ownership ,it had loads of torque , hardly ever needed to change gear going around corners ,you could go from 15 MPH in top gear ,straight up to 140 MPH ,it went around corners like it was on rails,it also had strong excelleration with a caravan attached ,its only drawback was the fuel cost 28 MPG solo ,and about 20 MPG towing ,i sold it in the end before i had an accident in it ,the i bought a Nissan Terrano 2.7 ,a lot more of a sedate drive , and in 2004 we bought the Mark 3 130 BHP TDCI estate ,and the last 2 cars we still have

hi all

may bee it,s just mine thats a lemon but I doubt it judging by the number of MK 2s in the scrapyard some much newer than mine.

they dont seem to have any value ok while there running and repairable but once over six years old, and it's scrap metal value only

I advertised mine on ebay (you can sell anything on there)and had to withdraw it as it's bids were

The V6 does not have a cam belt ,its chain driven ,and the v6 is basically a Mazda ,so what applies to the Mondeo applies to the Mazda V6 ,the V6 devalues so quickly because of running costs plus it doe's not have street cred ,if you buy a

Hi Anthony ,sorry i was refering to the MK2 not the MK3,I am sure yours is a very fine car ,i know the Jag and the Mondeo Mk3 V6 are sisters under a different skin ,if you go onto what car web site they get an excellent write up ,i am sure you will have many years of trouble free motoring
