Hi Dusty & soozeeg.

To be quite honest I don't mind the Mods passing my E-mail to another forum member having asked me in the first place. This is a perfectly adequate system in it's own right.

Not wishing to be too MI5 and all that jazz, but unless you are talking person to person and not using any transmission media (computers, mobile phones etc), it is possible have your conversation recorded for "training purposes".

Next time you talk on the phone to a utility supplier (electric, gas, water or local council), after listening to their blurb about calls being recorded, repeat the blurb to them and see what happens. 9 out of 10 times they put the phone down. Why?!!!

As I've said already, if one is not doing anything wrong or having ill intentions, why should we be bothered by moderation by third parties.

I personally can't wait for the upgrade and the chance to test the toys.

Atb Steve.

I was talking about a PRIVATE conversation, via PM (PRIVATE message!!) between two individuals, discussing something that is just between themselves, or not of particular interest to the wider forum members. However, I seem to be banging my head against a brick wall since you seem to be either unable or unwilling to take this in. I have no issue with the moderators doing the job they're supposed to do.

I'm now bowing out of this conversation as I'm fed up with repeating myself.

Taking the issue of PM's first.

A Private Message is just that,a PRIVATE message.

The Moderators will most certainly NOT have any access to PM's and most certainly do NOT want any access.

The tech team at Haymarket may possibly be able to see them, but I doubt very much that they have either the time or inclination to bother and that content is more than likely covered by the Data Protection Act and would require a Court Order to obtain any such information.

As for the new forum, I am informed that it is onl a matter of days away, providing nothing happens to change that, we could be on the new site next week .

Steve I think that you have got your wires crossed a wee bit.

The earlier points were made about a private messaging system, this is a method for two individuals to contact each other without their conversation appearing on the forum.

It is particularly useful for forwarding email addresses without having to wait for a moderator to notice the request and forward the address.

Most forums have some form of private messaging, whatever appears in the private messages is 'hidden' from view and is no business of moderators or anyone else's except the individuals in contact with each other.

Sue and DD made the point that private message systems are fine as long as they are definitely private

Hi Steve

I think you now grasp the main point about PMs.

I have no wish to be pedantic but imo it is a pre-requisite that PMs must be soley and exclusively for the eyes of the two participants.

As an example I have recently negotiated the purchase of a secondhand Izzy porch awning with a chap who posts on caravan talk.

Our PMs are guaranteed absolutely privacy. If they were not then someone could cheat and cause a fluctuation in the agreed price that may not be in either the seller or my best interest.

As I understand it PMs on most forums cannot be accessed by anyone other than the sender and recipient. In the same way you CANNOT access any of my e-mails now.

I and Soozeeg merely want an unequivocal guarantee from Haymarket that any PM system added to the updated Forum will be absolutely PRIVATE.

I hope this gives you a better understanding of our point of view here.

PMs do have a big part to play on Forums and give members the chance to communicate with one another on personal matters. Eg you may have an Insurance claim where you may need my help. That is business exclusively between us and no one else. Thus it equally protects your own business privacy.

Phew; hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Cheers

Thanks Dusty.

I do understand your point of view, but I supose I was being a little pladantic in suggesting that private messages be conducted outside the forum.

I prefer to use an email account for that. As I have a couple of accounts, I can use one for chatter and another for private use.

Simples, but effective.

Kind regards Steve.
