France in August

Spent a great May and June in France this year. Next year, the only window for travel will be the dreaded August. Is there any part of France that isn't totally mad busy in the high season but is still good to visit? Don't need beaches but husband is keen mountain biker so hills would be nice or he'll be bored!

Any ideas gratefully received!

If you co to the coast you'll find the roads busy, we've always got on OK in August, you just have to aloow for busy roads and restaurants.

Plus the second two weeks are quieter.

Gorges du Tarn area - some lovely campsites, nice river for canoeing, and not so busy as some areas, but also plenty of hills.

Auvergne - very few tourists, hilly, and volcanoes.

Upper Ardeche - lovely river, hills and few tourists.

Last two weeks in August site prices often come down and you may be able to use Camping Cheques (www.campingcheque.co.uk). We were on holiday this year from 22nd August onwards, and our 'main' site always had plenty of available pitches.

As mentioned after the 15th August things 'die off' drastically, even in the high spots. Also, if next year is anything like this one, even the high spots often had pitches due to the lack of Brits arriving. It seemed that often a telephone call the day before secured a pitch on sites where previously, it was 'forget it'.

We met people planning at the last minute to visit the Gorge du Tarn area and had no problem getting a site.

Of course if the Brits who stayed at home this year decide a soggy summer was too much, then it may change again, but unless the Pound makes a dramatic recovery, I think a lot will not venture abroad.

Thanks for your responses. We spent a few days at Millau on the edge of the Gorges du Tarn in May and would have no problem going back there. It was beautiful and my husband was in his biking element. Hot too! Just the ticket!
